Maybe this was fate.
The truth about her grandmother's death certainly played a significant role, but she knew that what this man had done for her recently had already moved her.
She had just been running away, unable to get over the emotional hurdle in her heart.
Now, she was willing to give him a chance, and to give herself one, too.
But she struggles with trust. The moment she decided to be with Yvan, she was already imagining what would happen if they failed again.
That way, if that day ever came, she wouldn't be caught completely off guard, lost in sorrow.
Winifred reached out and gently stroked the face of the man before her.
Yvan stirred, instinctively pulling her closer and mumbling, "Winifred…"
Thinking she'd woken him, Winifred quickly asked, "What is it?"
But Yvan didn't respond.
He was talking in his sleep.
He was calling her name even in his dreams.
A soft spot in Winifred's heart melted, while another part of her grew more resolute.
She was a cautious person, not one to take risks on uncertain things.
But now, she was willing to take a gamble.
Being with him could lead to two possible outcomes: they live happily ever after, or they end up going their separate ways again.
She was betting that she and Yvan would find their happiness together.
And if she lost, she'd have no regrets.
…
They went to bed so late that by the time Yvan woke up, it was already after ten in the morning.
He looked over at Winifred, who was still asleep.
Yvan frowned. "Under what circumstances would a person be completely untraceable?"
Joseph used to be a public servant; he couldn't have just vanished.
But now his badge number had been deactivated, and it's like he'd disappeared off the face of the earth.
David suggested, "Mr. Brown, is it possible Ms. Spencer's father was involved in some kind of confidential work? That might be why we can't find him through normal channels."
Yvan was displeased. "If the normal channels don't work, then hurry up and use special ones."
David sounded helpless. "Mr. Brown, if it involves national security, we might not have access."
"So you're saying you can't find him?" Yvan fumed. David was proving to be incompetent. The guy Todd recommended was just as unreliable as he was.
"Not necessarily," David said. "If we make an inquiry in Ms. Spencer's name, we might get unexpected results. After all, she is his biological daughter."
Yvan frowned, thinking for a moment. "Then try running a search in Winifred's name and let me know if you find anything. For now, send me the files you have on the rest of the Collins family."
Getting revenge for her grandmother was the most pressing matter right now.
