Murphy was the first to run over, throwing his arms around Yvan. “Uncle, what took you so long? I was getting tired of waiting.”
Yvan scooped Murphy up with a smile. “I spent a long time picking out a gift for you. Look, do you like this little car?”
Behind them, a staff member brought in a realistic model Ferrari race car.
Murphy immediately struggled to get down, his hands tracing the lines of the car as he jumped with excitement. “I love it! I love it! Thank you, Uncle! I want to drive it right now.”
“Murphy, it’s time to cut the birthday cake. Your uncle can take you for a drive later,” Yetta Brown said, walking over to pick him up. She then shot Yvan a meaningful look. “Yvan, come sit with us.”
Yvan didn’t understand the signal but followed her inside anyway.
Winifred had spotted Yvan the moment Murphy ran out.
Murphy called him uncle, which meant Murphy’s mother was his sister. And Mr. and Mrs. Brown… they were Yvan’s parents?
Winifred froze on the spot.
She never imagined such a coincidence was possible. She had been trying so desperately to escape Yvan, only to walk right into his family’s home.
Before Yvan could get any closer, Winifred scrambled to her feet, desperate to hide.
Monica quickly called out to her, “Dr. Spencer, where are you going?”
“I—I just need to use the restroom.”
Winifred mumbled the excuse, grabbed her purse, and turned to leave.
Behind her, she heard Teresa’s voice. “Yvan, you’re here.”
Winifred quickened her pace.
…
Inside the restroom, Winifred leaned against the door, her hands clutching her purse so tightly her knuckles turned white. She had no idea how to face this.
She and Yvan had finally separated. She didn’t want to be thrown back into his orbit again.
Maybe she could just slip out? She could call Murphy’s mother later and say an emergency came up, that she didn’t have time to say goodbye.
At this point, Winifred couldn’t be bothered with whether it was rude or not.
She heard the sound of the birthday song starting outside.
They were probably all gathered for the celebration. No one would notice her leaving.
Taking a few deep breaths, Winifred gently opened the restroom door.
She didn’t expect Yvan to be standing right outside.
Winifred froze, at a complete loss.
“What a coincidence!” she managed, forcing a stiff smile. “You’re here too.”
“Murphy is my sister’s son,” Yvan explained.
“Oh,” Winifred said, her lips twitching slightly. “I didn’t know.”
“Hiding from her,” Yvan said. “She’s incredibly annoying.”
Winifred looked at him calmly. “Well, you can keep hiding in here. I’m leaving.”
Yvan grabbed her hand.
Winifred’s body stiffened, and she tried to pull away. “Yvan…”
Yvan immediately let go. “Let’s go back together.”
“Aren’t you supposed to be hiding from that woman?” Winifred asked.
“Not anymore.”
Winifred said nothing, her expression cold as she turned and walked ahead. Yvan followed behind her.
When they returned to the living room, the birthday song was over, and the cake had been cut.
Monica, Hogan, and Yetta Brown all looked up at the two of them, their gazes probing.
As soon as Murphy saw Winifred, he handed her a slice of cake. “Winifred, hurry and eat your cake. Then you can go.”
He still remembered she had an emergency.
Winifred took the plate and sat down between Monica and Murphy. “Thank you, Murphy.”
Yvan had no choice but to take the empty seat across from them.
