How to Train Your Ex-Billionaire novel Chapter 95

The living room fell silent.

After a long moment, Yvan finally spoke. “It wasn’t actually stomach bleeding. The doctor said it was just a burst capillary in my mouth.”

Winifred clutched her cup. “Regardless, you shouldn’t drink so much. It’s your own body. If you ruin it, you’re the one who suffers.”

“Are you saying this to me as a friend?” Yvan looked at her.

Winifred faltered, looking away uncomfortably. “Of course.”

Yvan ran his thumb over the smooth surface of the cup and gave a bitter laugh.

He drained the tea in one gulp and said, “Winifred, can you tell me what your life has been like these past seven years?”

Winifred subconsciously curled her fingers. “There’s not much to tell. I studied, went to grad school, did my residency, and then started working.”

“Did you… date anyone during that time?”

Winifred lowered her eyes, staring into the clear, pale yellow tea, and told a lie. “I dated one person.”

“When?” Yvan’s grip on his cup tightened.

“During my junior year of college,” Winifred said, her voice steady. “But we broke up after graduation.”

“Why did you break up?”

“Long distance,” Winifred said. “He wanted to go back to his hometown, and I didn’t want to go with him, so we split.”

“So, it wasn’t true love,” Yvan said, almost jokingly. “If you really love someone, you’d follow them anywhere, right?”

Winifred remained silent.

Yvan continued on his own, “When you broke up with me, you also used long distance as the reason. But I know that wasn’t why. It was just an excuse. The real reason was that I hurt you.”

He looked up at her. “If I hadn’t said what I said back then, would you still have broken up with me? Even if I was in another country?”

A tremor went through Winifred’s heart. If he hadn’t said those words, she probably would have foolishly waited for him in her home country for three, five, or even seven years.

But there were no ‘if onlys’.

She didn’t answer, but the expression on her face betrayed her.

The realization brought a fresh wave of bitterness to Yvan’s heart. Winifred must have loved him so, so much back then, and he had destroyed that sincere love with his own hands.

The atmosphere grew heavy. Winifred tried to lighten the mood. “What about you? You must have had a good time abroad, right?”
