Stella and her colleagues rushed Winifred to the surgical department.
When she woke up, she found Stella sitting by her bedside.
“Dr. Spencer, you’re awake! How are you feeling?” Stella asked urgently.
“I’m fine,” Winifred said, gently shaking her head. The movement sent the room spinning, and she quickly closed her eyes again.
“Dr. Spencer, don’t move your head,” Stella cautioned. “The doctor said you have a mild concussion. Other than that, it’s nothing serious, just a small cut on the back of your head.”
Winifred murmured an acknowledgment. “Did they catch that man? Do they know what happened?”
She was still worried about the incident. Her professional reputation was at stake.
“They caught him, but he was released not long after,” Stella said with frustration. “He was a patient you performed a root canal on a year ago. We checked the records from back then, and your procedure was flawless. Right now, it’s just his word against ours that there’s a problem with his tooth. But he refuses to let us examine him and just keeps insisting you cheated him and that the hospital needs to compensate him. It’s obvious he’s just trying to extort money. The hospital is currently in negotiations with him.”
Winifred gave a bitter smile. “Is it just my unlucky year or something?”
One bad thing after another.
“Don’t worry,” Stella comforted her. “The hospital won’t let him get away with this. He has no evidence, so he can’t just blackmail you. The hospital administration and the department head came to see you while you were still unconscious. They told me to tell you to rest well and that the hospital will cover all your medical expenses.”
Winifred nodded. “And my patient…”
She remembered she had been in the middle of a procedure.
“The department head has already reassigned the patient to another doctor, so don’t worry about any of that,” Stella said. “By the way, should you call your family to have someone look after you? I have to work tomorrow, so I can’t be here all the time. With a concussion, you really should have someone with you.”
“No, that’s alright. Could you just help me hire a caregiver?” Winifred replied. “My mother… she’s busy.”
She didn’t want Queena to come. She would rather have a stranger take care of her than accept her mother’s help.
“Okay, then. You get some rest. I’ll go find a caregiver for you and grab you some food,” Stella said, getting up.
