“Who is this? Are you looking for Dr. Spencer?” Stella was surprised to hear a child’s voice. She had never heard that Dr. Spencer had any children.

Murphy was also confused. “You’re not Winifred?”

“I’m Dr. Spencer’s colleague,” Stella explained. “Who is this?”

“I’m Winifred’s friend. Where is she?” Murphy asked.

Stella said, “Dr. Spencer had a little accident. She’s been admitted to the hospital…”

Before she could finish, an urgent male voice cut in. “What happened to Winifred?”

Stella paused. “And you are…?”

“I’m a friend of Winifred’s,” Yvan said. “What happened to her?”

Stella explained, “Dr. Spencer was involved in an incident at the hospital. A patient pushed her, and she hit her head. She’s staying here for observation.”

Yvan’s voice was tense. “Is it serious? Is she in your hospital? What room is she in?”

“Don’t worry, it’s just a small cut on the back of her head and a mild concussion,” Stella reassured him. “If you want to visit her, she’s in the neurosurgery ward. Room 21.”

“Okay, thank you.”

Yvan hung up the phone and immediately scooped up Murphy. “Murphy, let’s go to the hospital to see Winifred, okay? She’s hurt.”

Of course, Murphy had no objections.

Yvan carried Murphy toward the hospital. As they passed a flower shop by the entrance, he paused for a moment before going in to buy a bouquet. He then stopped at the fruit stand next door for a fruit basket before finally leading Murphy inside.

Stella arrived at the hospital room just before Yvan.

She set down the food container and placed Winifred’s purse beside her, smiling. “A little boy just called your phone. I answered it.”

“A little boy?”

Winifred was puzzled. The only children she knew were Delia and Murphy. If it had been Delia, Stella wouldn’t have phrased it that way, so it must have been Murphy.

“Yes, a little boy,” Stella said. “And a man who said he was your friend.”
