He was covered in wounds. They bled without stopping. His own healing had failed. That meant he was in real danger.

Victoria confirmed ithis wolf spirit was barely clinging on.

Travis spoke weakly. Thank youfor saving me. I’ll find a way to repay you.

I immediately pulled powder to stop the bleeding from my bag and sprinkled it on his wounds. The bleeding slowed on contact. Then, quietly, I used a thread of Victoria’s energy to mend his fading wolf spirit.

When I was done, I looked at him. Well said. Saving a life is a big debt. So, how do you plan to repay me?

Anything within my power. Name it.

His voice was still weak, but his eyes were firm.

I studied him.

I knew of Travis, though he didn’t know me.

Back in my Brookstone days, I’d heard of him. A rare genius in business. With sharp instincts, he’d carved out a place for himself in a cutthroat world.

Alright,I said. Since you offeredfrom now on, you work for me.

Travis refused instantly. No. You saw. Someone wants me dead. If I’m with you, I’ll bring you nothing but trouble.

I gave an indifferent shrug. You think I’m afraid of them?

Travis was taken aback. He hesitated. “Youyou smell like an Omega. But you move like a highranking warrior. How?

I frowned but didn’t explain. He wisely didn’t push.

After a moment of silence, he spoke again, his tone solemn. I’ve considered your offer. If you truly don’t mind the riskfrom today, Travis is yours to command.

I handed him a small medicine bottle and stood up. I’m Lira Krom. Take this oral medicine. Come find me once you’ve healed.

After giving him my contact, I left.

When I got back to my place and opened the door, Serena was there. She stood up to greet me.

Lira, you’re back so late. Is everything alright?

She’d had a hard life and was acutely sensitive to the scent of blood. She must have caught the trace still on me, even after I’d cleaned up.

It’s fine. Wasn’t my blood,I reassured her as I walked toward the bedroom. I saved someone tonight. I’ll introduce you in a few days.”

Okay.Seeing I didn’t want to elaborate, she didn’t ask more. She turned and went into the kitchen.

A short while later, changed and freshened up, I came out. Serena was placing a plate of pasta on the table.

She saw me and smiled, waving me over. Come, eat a little more. You’re too thin. If Elder Krom saw you, she’d scold you for not looking after yourself properly.

I walked over with a smile, sat down, and took a bite. You’re so warm and caring. I wish my fated mate were you.”

Serena laughed, reaching out to tap my forehead playfully. You little thing. Just eat. In this life, I only hope you’re lucky enough to find your true mate. As for me

Her voice faded. Her eyes dimmed.

I knew she was thinking about her past again. The pain from her former mate. Doubting if she could ever be happy like that again.

Seeing her like this made my heart ache.

I put down my fork and looked at her seriously. Serena, we have to look forward. Being here, now, is what matters. If you ever meet someone right for you, hold on to them. Whatever you decide, I’ll support you. Fully.”

Serena shook off the melancholy instantly. She gave me a mockstern look. Listen to you, so wise. Now hurry up and eat. I’m going to rest. With that, she turned and headed to her room.

Over the next few days, Serena was buried in work that had piled up. She barely had time to breathe.
