Chapter 109
Sophie knew Zack had exaggerated.
Marcus wasn’t still sitting there waiting for her. And yet, almost against her will, she found herself walking toward him.
Clink!
She lifted her juice and tapped it lightly against his glass.
Marcus looked up and met those smiling peach–blossom eyes.
The laughter in her gaze shimmered like an entire galaxy hidden within. That crisp sound shattered his calm, and her smile rippled all the way to his
heart.
“Mr. Morgan, thank you for stepping in earlier.”
Marcus’s lips curved into a wicked grin. “I’d prefer if you called me Uncle.”
Every time she called him that, it was to seek his protection, to lean on him. And he didn’t mind.
“You do realize that was all an act, right?” Sophie’s tone cooled, as if she had suddenly reverted to a strictly professional mode.
The smile vanished from her eyes, and Marcus felt an unexpected irritation.
“Couldn’t find Ryan Mason, so you used me as the substitute?” He leaned forward, resting an elbow on his knee, gaze burning.
“So, did I please you?”
His voice dripped with innuendo, and Sophie’s heart skipped. She instinctively leaned back.
“Mr. Morgan, do you always phrase things in such misleading ways?”
She knew what he meant–had the act gone smoothly? But the words he chose carried a very different implication.
The wicked glint in his eyes deepened. “So… did you enjoy it?”
Sophie dodged his gaze, throat tight. “Thank you for playing along.”
“Why are you blushing, Sophie?”
He leaned back, amusement flickering in his eyes.
“You’re seeing things.” She stood abruptly. “I have something to do. I’ll be leaving. Here’s your five hundred million back.”
She tossed the check onto the table and fled.
From the moment Marcus agreed to act with her, she had been planning.
Her staged intimacy with Ryan had stirred Liam’s suspicion, but not enough tbreak his control.
So when Liam witnessed Marcus changing her shoes, she seized the chance a wove an even bigger act–every move designed to provoke Liam into losing his grip.
Only when a man lost control could he stumble into ruin.
And she had succeeded.
What surprised her was that Marcus–aloof, powerful Marcus–had willingly allowed himself to be used.

Chapter 109
In that act, how much of his emotion had been real?
Lena trailed after Liam back to his room. The moment she stepped inside, a glass came hurtling toward her, shattering against the door behind.
She froze, blood turning to ice.
Had Liam just tried to hit her?
For an instant, Liam faltered–then rushed forward to pull her close.
“Lena, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I was just… too angry.”
Her tension eased. She nuzzled against his neck.
“I know you didn’t mean it, Brother. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure Sophie pays for humiliating you today.”
Liam released her, expression grave.
“Not yet. Until I marry Sophie, you can’t make a move.”
She frowned. “Brother, after everything, you still plan to marry her?”
“I told you–I’ll marry Sophie no matter what. That won’t change.” His voice was hard.
Only then could he secure a share of the Chandler family’s assets and leverage their name to reclaim his place in the Morgan Group.
A flash of venom flickered in Lena’s eyes, gone too quickly for Liam to notice.
“I understand. Calm down, Brother. I’ll step out for a bit.”
She left.
As the door closed behind her, the mask dropped. Fury and hatred twisted her face. Her fists clenched so tightly her nails cut into her palms, but she didn’t care.
Sophie, I’ll never let you marry him.
Out at the lakeside pavilion, Ryan Mason stood staring into the distance. There was nothing worth looking at–only the landscape of his own thoughts.
“I knew you’d come, Mr. Mason.”
Lena, mask removed, smiled as though victory were already hers.
Ryan wasn’t surprised. “So. How do you plan to hand Sophie over to me?”
She offered him a small sandalwood box. “Inside is an incense stick. One breath of its smoke, and desire will consume her.”
Ryan’s brows drew together, revulsion plain in his eyes.
“This is your grand plan? So dirty.”
She sneered. “Don’t pretend to be noble. I know you’ve coveted Sophie for a long time.”
“You know she’s engaged, yet you still pursued her. Is that any cleaner?”
