Liam’s smile was soft, almost gentle, but to Lena it was terrifying.
Was this the man she had loved all these years?
He slowly pried her fingers off his ankle, one by one, his voice smooth as silk.
“Be good, Lena. Get some rest. Sleep, and everything will be fine.”
Without another glance, he wheeled himself out of the room, not even looking back.
Sophie had watched the whole thing unfold. Disgust churned inside her–she pressed a hand over her mouth and dry–heaved into the sink.
Liam and Irene…they were monsters dressed in human skin. Executioners. Animals.
The door clicked shut, and the light in Lena’s eyes flickered out.
She collapsed onto the floor, her pale face stark against the growing pool of blood.
Sophie’s brows knit tight. This wasn’t just about the baby anymore–if this continued, Lena herself would die.
Sophie had no saintly compassion for her, but if Lena died here, Sophie would inevitably be implicated. She couldn’t let her own child grow up with a mother tainted by scandal.
Suppressing the nausea, Sophie stepped forward.
“The floor’s too cold. I’ll drag you into my room. You’ve lost too much blood, you’ll start to feel chilled. I’ll turn the heat up and cover you with blankets. After that…it’s up to fate.”
Lena’s consciousness was already slipping away, unable to answer.
Sophie sighed, hooked her arms under Lena’s, and dragged her back into her own room. She did what she could–beyond that, Lena’s survival would depend on her own luck.
Sophie sat up in the chair all night. Sleep was impossible, Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the image of a woman curled up in a pool of her own blood, clutching her stomach. Fear gnawed at her–what if she ended up like that? What if one careless moment meant her child was gone too?
By dawn, she was barely holding herself upright, head propped on her hand, eyelids heavy.
Then a shrill scream ripped through the silence.
“Sophie, I’ll kill you! You murdered my child–I’ll kill you!”
Sophie shot to her feet and caught Lena’s wrist mid–swing.
“Have you lost your mind? The ones who killed your baby were Liam and Irene–what the hell are you screaming at me for?”
“If you hadn’t seduced Liam, none of this would’ve happened!” Lena’s voice cracked with hysteria. “If he hadn’t been afraid Marcus would find you, he would’ve called for help! Liam loves me–he had no choice! You, Sophie, you’re the reason everything went wrong!”
Her rant dissolved into manic laughter, followed by sudden sobs. Her mind was unraveling right in front of Sophie’s eyes.

Chapter 197
Sophie released her wrist, her voice sharp as ice.
“If you still have a shred of sanity left, think about it–who’s truly to blame here? Do you really think the only one who did wrong was Liam?”
“You crossed the line the moment you crawled into your own cousin’s bed. You chose to be the other woman. And when you realized the man you clung to would never love you, instead of leaving, you pushed the blame onto another woman who had nothing to do with your choices.”
“Lena, you’re pathetic. Maybe it’s better that your baby didn’t survive. You can’t even take responsibility for your own actions–how could you
ever be a mother?”
Lena shrieked, clutching her head.
“Shut up, Sophie! You’re lying! Liam and I knew each other first–why was it you who got engaged to him? You’re the mistress! You’re the homewrecker!”
Sophie shook her head slowly.
“No, Lena. You just can’t face the truth–you can’t admit you loved the wrong man. You can’t admit Liam never loved you, not once.”
“That’s not true!” Lena screamed, eyes wild. “Liam loved me! He was so gentle–how could he not?”
Sophie’s laugh was cold.
“Gentle? A little kindness and you call that love? How starved for affection are you?”
“You schemed to use pregnancy as leverage to tie him down, but you never noticed–he’s been using you all along. You’re nothing but a blade in his hand, Lena. And the second he doesn’t need you, he’ll throw you away.”
A deep voice cut through the room.
“Are you done talking?”
Liam pushed the door open, wheeling inside. His gaze swept over Lena, bloodied but still alive. Disappointment flickered in his eyes.
“You’re still breathing. Must be fate. Go clean yourself up. Take a shower. Rest.”
Lena’s eyes lit up instantly, like a pet given a scrap of affection.
“I knew it–you do care for me, Liam. I’ll go wash up and rest, just like you said.”
She skipped off like an obedient child,
Sophie watched her leave, her heart sinking. Lena’s mind was clearly slipping into madness.
Turning to Liam, Sophie’s eyes were filled with scorn.
“You’re good, I’ll give you that. Even like this, she still clings to you–still believes in you. She’d rather go insane than admit you’ve been cruel to her all along.”
“Don’t you ever lie awake at night, haunted by the way you’ve destroyed someone who loved you?”
Liam’s gaze locked onto her, cold and unwavering.
“If I betray someone, I do it completely. And if I want you, Sophie, I’ll take you completely.”
“You disgust me,” she spat.

His lips curled into a thin smile.
“My uncle stole you from me. If anyone’s truly shameless here, it’s him.”
