Chapter 202
In that instant, Sophie understood.
No wonder Marcus had stuffed her phone into his pocket earlier, deliberately dragging out the topic–he had been waiting for this moment.
She drew in a deep breath, pushed him back, and sat halfway up.
“First of all, I don’t think what I did was wrong. If you don’t like it, go be mad somewhere else. I’m still a patient, I need rest. I don’t have the energy to argue with you.”
Marcus’s lips curved faintly.
“Sophie, you’re being completely unreasonable.”
Sophie ignored him and went straight on.
“That day, when Irene Morgan tried to hit me, Liam stepped in to stop her. That’s when I realized he still had feelings for me.”
“I took advantage of that, tried to seduce him–just enough to lower his guard so I could grab his phone.”
“Marcus, I waited days for you. I knew if you could’ve found me, you already would have. If you hadn’t come, it meant you’d run into real trouble. I couldn’t put all my hope in you. I had to try to save myself.”
“I didn’t expect Liam’s body to react to me, or that it would end up drawing Lena and Irene into a screaming match.”
“They fought so badly Lena miscarried. She almost died.”
“And even then, Liam still refused to call an ambulance. That’s when I realized how ridiculous my so–called plan of seduction was. A man like him–he doesn’t even care about his own child. Why would he care about anyone else?”
As she spoke, Marcus simply watched her, his hawk–like eyes shadowed with something complex, restrained.
“In time,” he said quietly, “Liam will lose interest in every woman.”
Sophie frowned, ready to ask what he meant, but Marcus pressed her shoulders down and tucked her firmly back beneath the blanket.
“You need sleep.”
Confused, but too tired to fight, Sophie obediently lay back.
Marcus pulled the covers snug around her and returned to the couch.
She blinked at him, still wanting to ask a thousand questions, but the drowsiness swallowed her before she could.
Once Marcus was certain she was asleep, he slipped out of the room and dialed Chris.
“There’s something I want you to handle.”
For the next few days, Marcus never left Sophie’s side, caring for her as if she were a child.
On the third day, Zack flew in with his team and gave Sophie a full check–up. Once her condition was cleared, they boarded a private jet back to Riverland.
As soon as they landed, Marcus checked his watch, then turned to Sophie.
“The show’s about to start. Do you still have the strength to watch it?”

Chapter 202
Her soft amber eyes lit with mischief.
“Of course. How could I miss such a spectacle?”
“Then come with me.” He extended his hand.
Sophie was just about to take it when her brother Ethan Chandler coughed pointedly.
She froze, then turned. “Ethan, are you okay? Sore throat?”
“I’m fine. But Mom and Dad are waiting at home to see you.”
The message was clear: he wasn’t letting her leave with Marcus.
Sophie looked torn, unsure what to do.
Marcus glanced at Ethan, a smile on his lips but his eyes sharp with pressure.
“She’ll be back. I’ll bring her myself after the show.”
Ethan straightened, playing the protective brother.
“Riverland’s still unstable. The safest thing for Sophie is to come straight home.”
Their eyes locked, sparks crackling in the air.
Sophie gave a helpless sigh, tempted to slip away on her own.
“Don’t worry, leave it to me.”
Sherry Shaw thumped her chest with confidence.
Before Sophie could guess what she meant, Sherry grabbed Ethan’s arm and yanked hard enough to make him stumble.
The tension between the two men evaporated instantly.
Ethan scowled. “What the hell was that for?”
“Your parents have been waiting long enough. Let’s go home. Once the show’s over, Marcus will bring Sophie back himself.”
She tugged insistently at his arm, dragging him toward the car.
Ethan started to shake her off, but Sherry cut him off sharply.
“Can’t you see Sophie wants to go? She’s been cooped up in a hospital for days. What’s wrong with letting her get some air? Those two finally made it out together–let them have their moment. Or are you trying to stop her from being with the man she actually loves?”
Ethan froze, speechless, and let himself be pulled away.
Watching them leave, Sophie blinked in surprise.
“Since when did my brother and Sherry get along like that?”
“What trick did she use to tame him so easily?”
