Chapter 204
The moment Marcus’s words dropped, the rest of the reporters staggered back, none daring to get any closer. One reckless question could mean bankruptcy–who would risk it?
Marcus turned his gaze toward Sophie, the cold edge in his eyes softening.
“Let’s go in.”
“Okay.”
Sophie followed him into the press hall. Not a single reporter dared step forward this time.
The event had been staged with overwhelming grandeur. The old man had chosen the very heart of Riverland’s central convention hall, a location that alone revealed how much weight he put on this press conference.
It was set for a global livestream, with major networks lined up for rebroadcast.
Behind the curtain, Gideon was dressed in a bespoke suit, his hair slicked back but the sweat running down his forehead betrayed his nerves. He paced restlessly, rubbing his hands together, swiping at the perspiration with the back of his hand.
The old man watched with a deep frown.
“You’re my son too. Can’t you show some backbone?”
“Dad-”
“I’ve told you,” the old man cut him off, voice low and sharp. “Never call me that in public. With so many people here, if our relationship leaks, do you realize the disaster it would bring to Morgan Group?”
Gideon stiffened and quickly corrected himself. “Uncle…I grew up overseas, studied design in college. I never learned business management. I’m scared I’ll mess this up.”
“There’s nothing to fear,” the old man said coldly. “You just need to play the part of CEO in front of the cameras. I’ll handle everything behind the
scenes.”
“But if you’re taking the real power anyway, why not just take the CEO title yourself?” Gideon asked, scratching his head.
The old man’s gaze darkened, his voice a growl. “Some questions shouldn’t be asked.”
“Sorry, Uncle. I spoke out of tufn.”
With a glare, the old man turned away, refusing to look at him.
Years ago, when he himself had vied for the CEO seat, rumors had spread that he’d destroyed his own father to seize power. Because of that scandal, Morgan Group had fallen into its darkest years.
He’d been forced to step back, handing the company over to Marcus, fresh out of college. At the time, he’d thought Marcus would be his puppet–a figurehead while he pulled the strings.
But he had underestimated him. Marcus might have looked obedient, but every decision he made was his own. Worse, every step Marcus took was the right one. He had led Morgan Group to heights the old man had never dared dream of.
The humiliation festered. He refused to admit his son had outshone him. Refused to believe anyone could rule Morgan Group better than himself.
But with his old scandal, he couldn’t claim the throne openly.
So he needed a puppet–a frontman CEO–while he held the reins in secret. Under his control, Morgan Group would rise higher than ever. He would
never lose to his own son.

Chapter 204
The conference began. The old man gave Gideon a sharp look before striding ward the stage.
“Chairman, bad news?”
A guard rushed in, breathless, “Mr. Marcus just walked in–with Miss Chandle
“What?”
The old man froze, his wrinkled face etched with shock. His men had been monitoring Marcus. He was supposed to be in France, tending to Sophie’s
recovery.
“We had contact with our people just ten minutes ago. Now they’ve gone dark te must have fed us false intel.”
“Useless fools!” the old man snarled. “No matter what, keep him contained. He cannot disrupt today!”
But it was too late.
The spotlights fell, and the hall erupted–not for him, but for the figures entering at the back.
Marcus and Sophie walked in, casual, unadorned, yet carrying a presence that commanded every gaze. Cameras swung instantly, capturing every frame.
On stage, ignored and seething, the old man nearly shook apart with rage. He glared daggers at Marcus.
Marcus met his eyes, lips curving in a taunting smirk. He even raised a hand in a lazy wave.
The gesture was reckless, defiant, mocking.
Reporters pivoted their cameras back and forth–from Marcus to the old man–catching every contrast.
The old man’s mask slipped, his face twisted in fury. Instead of a dignified chairman, he looked like a bitter, cornered old man.
