**Chapter 23**
Irene’s fury erupted like a lioness roused from slumber, her voice a fierce crescendo that filled the room.
“What utter nonsense are you blathering about?! My son is anything but worthless!”
She gestured emphatically, her frustration palpable.
“Liora is a design prodigy, a genius who has claimed every conceivable award! And that’s all thanks to my son!”
Sophie, arms crossed, let out a chilling laugh that echoed in the tense air.
“Liora’s accolades are a testament to her own remarkable talent. What does that have to do with your son?”
Irene’s face flushed, her indignation rising like steam from a kettle.
“Marcus was already raking in billions for the Morgan Group by his age!”
“And your son?” Sophie paused, a sharp edge to her voice, her words dripping with sarcasm. “Still unable to present a single noteworthy accomplishment.”
“What exactly is there to be proud of?”
The entire hall fell into an oppressive silence, the air thick with disbelief.
All eyes turned to Sophie, mouths agape, shocked by her audacity.
Was this truly the same Sophie who had once been hopelessly enamored with Liam, hanging on his every word like a devoted acolyte?
Irene, her face a mask of fury, could barely contain herself. She shot a furious glare at Sophie before shoving her way through the crowd, storming off as if the very ground beneath her feet was too hot to bear.
A wave of satisfaction washed over Sophie, a feeling she had never quite tasted before.
So this is how it feels to finally stand up for oneself.
She turned her gaze in search of her parents, but instead found Marcus standing nearby, his figure silhouetted against the expansive windows. The breeze tousled his hair, giving him an air of effortless cool. Although the light obscured his features, she could feel his intense gaze upon her, eyes sharp and unreadable, sending a shiver down her spine.
Her heart raced.
Did he hear everything?
“Sophie!” Liam’s voice cut through the moment, and he rushed toward her, grasping her wrist with an urgency that felt almost desperate. “Are you out of your mind? That was my mother!”
Sophie yanked her hand free, her expression icy as she met his gaze. “Before you start hurling accusations, maybe you should consider what your mother said first.”
