**Chapter 37**
Sophie burst into the design department of the Morgan Group, her frustration palpable as she scanned the room. The air was thick with the scent of fresh ink and the sound of keyboards clicking, but all that faded into the background as she focused on her mission.
“Where’s Liam?” she demanded, her voice sharp as she seized one of the designers by the arm, her grip firm yet desperate.
The designer, caught off guard, blinked and quickly regained composure. “Mr. Morgan flew to South City early this morning. Do you have an appointment?” he replied, maintaining a professional demeanor despite the tension.
“Call him! It’s urgent!” Sophie insisted, her heart racing. She could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on her.
The designer hesitated, his voice steady but his eyes betraying his unease. “I’m sorry, miss. If it’s not important, we’re not allowed to—”
“I’m his fiancée!” Sophie interjected, her frustration boiling over as she pulled out a photo of the two of them, a moment of joy now tainted by the urgency of the present.
The designer’s expression shifted, a flicker of recognition crossing his face. He quickly handed her the phone, his hands trembling slightly. “Miss Chandler, here—you can speak to Mr. Morgan directly!”
With renewed determination, Sophie snatched the phone and dialed Liam’s number, her fingers shaking with anxiety.
“I told you—don’t bother me unless it’s important—” Liam’s voice came through, clipped and irritated.
“Liam!” Sophie exploded, her voice rising with indignation. “You ignore my calls but pick up for someone else? Did you block me?!”
There was a moment of silence on the other end, a pause that felt like an eternity. “Sophie? What are you—”
“Liora is competing in the Starlight Cup—why the hell didn’t I know about it?! Care to explain?” Her voice trembled with a mix of anger and fear.
“Calm down, calm down. I’m busy out here. We’ll talk about it when I get back—”
Beep-beep-beep—
Sophie stared at the screen, her heart racing as the call disconnected. The anger surged within her, and she nearly hurled the phone against the wall.
“There’s nothing in this company I don’t know,” Marcus replied coolly, his gaze unwavering. “I told you to stay away from Liam.”
“You came to the Morgan Group looking for him like it was nothing—did you even think about what would happen if I found out?” His words were laced with a condescending edge, and Sophie felt her resolve waver.
Despite the pounding in her chest, she forced herself to stand tall. “I went to see him for work. It had nothing to do with personal feelings,” she asserted, trying to maintain a semblance of control.
Marcus let out a cold chuckle, a sound that sent a chill down her spine. “You’ve got some nerve.”
“I’m telling the truth! This involves the Morgan Group too. If we don’t stop it now, it could damage the company’s reputation,” she insisted, her voice rising with urgency.
“That’s a terrible joke,” Marcus cut her off sharply. “Everyone in Riverland knows you haven’t worked since you graduated. And now you expect me to believe you’re talking to Liam about business?”
“You really think I’d buy that?” she challenged, her eyes narrowing as she prepared for the battle ahead.
