Thalia turned and left the basement. When the warm sunlight wrapped around her, she finally felt alive again.

She exhaled deeply, then looked at Darion, who stood silently beside her. “Let’s go back,” she said.

But Darion said, “Want to go inside and rest for a bit?”

Thalia glanced at the villa ahead. She’d never been here before, and she had no intention of resting here.

“I want to go home,” she said.

Thalia walked ahead on her own, not waiting for anyone.

“Thalia,” Darion called out.

His deep, steady voice sounded from behind her.

Thalia stopped in her tracks and turned to face him. “What’s up?”

Darion’s dark, intense gaze locked onto her. “If you’d known from the start that the person you saved back then was Emely, would you still have come looking for me?”

Thalia looked at him coolly. “If you’d known from the beginning that it was Miya who saved you, would you still have said yes to me?”

A gentle breeze swept by, scattering their words across the grass.

Thalia gave a faint smile. “You never really understood me, Darion. We just aren’t right for each other.”

Without another word, she turned and walked away.

“I would.”

From behind her, Darion’s voice rang out, firm and resolute. “I would.”

Thalia didn’t turn around. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”

But Darion strode over and grabbed her wrist. “It matters, a lot. We were meant to be together, Thalia. There’s no point in asking ‘what if. The only reason I asked is because I’m scared. I’m terrified you’ll realize you loved the wrong person, and then you’ll never look at me again.”

He stared into her eyes, his words landing heavy and raw, “I’m scared, Thalia. Really scared.”

He held her wrist tight. “I messed up, I know. I was so sure you loved me, I thought you’d never blame me, that you’d stick by me no matter what.

“I was arrogant, and now I see how wrong I was. I was naive. Love is supposed to be about two people, and I never should’ve dragged you into all that crap…”

“It took me forever to figure this out. I tried to let you go, to give you the divorce you wanted. But Thalia… every day without you, it hurts. It really hurts.”

He grabbed her hand and pressed it to his chest, his voice rough and shaky. “Even now, I don’t want to let you go. I don’t want a divorce.”

Thalia could feel his heart pounding wildly under her palm, matching every word he said. It was beating even harder now.

Thalia’s long lashes fluttered as she spoke slowly, “We made a deal.”

Darion squeezed his eyes shut in pain, his head dropping, his whole body slumping as if the weight of it all was too much to bear. After a long moment, he finally let go of her hand.

Thalia met his gaze and said, “We’re not right for each other.”

But Darion turned away, his tone calm again. “Yeah, I know. So when all this is over, you’re free to go your own way. I won’t stop you.”

With that, he strode off.

Thalia watched his retreating figure. It seemed as if he was fleeing.
