I Forgot I Ever Loved You (Zoe and Hayden) novel Chapter 31

Zoe's heart hammered against her ribs as she returned to her office.

She sat down, completely bewildered.

Sienna and Hayden were a couple. Why did seeing them together feel like a knife twisting in her chest?

But Zoe couldn't deny her physical reaction. It had been purely subconscious; she had fled the scene before her brain could even process it.

She didn't have the courage to go back. Between her cold symptoms acting up and the tears threatening to fall, her head was pounding mercilessly.

She decided to put the issue with Hayden on hold. She could investigate it slowly.

By the time she picked Lily up and returned home that evening, Zoe completely collapsed.

She was weak with illness and skipped dinner entirely.

Hayden came home unusually early and found Lily playing alone in her room.

The lights in Zoe's room were completely off.

"Mrs. Gable, where is my wife?"

It was the first time in five years Hayden had referred to Zoe as his wife.

Mrs. Gable was momentarily stunned.

"M-Ms. Lynd doesn't seem to be feeling well."

She wasn't entirely sure; all she knew was that Zoe hadn't come down for dinner.

Just like always, Mrs. Gable hadn't bothered to check on her.

"Make some soup and bring it up to her."

Hayden frowned.

She had looked perfectly fine during the day. How did she suddenly fall ill by nightfall?

Dr. Muir was once again summoned to the villa, staring down at the feverish woman murmuring incoherently on the bed.

He finally said something he really shouldn't have.

"Could you try treating her with a little more care?"

Dr. Muir kept his words vague, but Hayden wasn't an idiot.

"..."

"The weather is completely unpredictable right now. It's incredibly easy to catch a cold at the start of spring. I'll prescribe some medication and give her an injection to bring the fever down."

After finishing his assessment, Dr. Muir handed over a tube of ointment.

Hayden looked at it in confusion.

In the past, he would always stay to play with Holden for a long while. He used to take the two of them out to amusement parks or the movies.

To any outsider, they looked exactly like a perfectly happy family of three.

Whenever Hayden was with them, he never avoided the public eye, nor did he ever bother to explain their relationship to anyone.

Sienna knew that choosing Charles back then had been the right gamble.

Using her son, she had not only secured the inheritance meant for the second Thorne son, but she also believed she held Hayden's heart firmly in her grasp.

For five years, she truly thought Hayden and Zoe had only slept together that one time, purely to produce Lily as a blood donor for Holden.

She never imagined that Hayden and Zoe were actuallyโ€”

And they hadn't even drawn the curtains, giving her a front-row seat to the intimate scene.

Sienna clenched her fists, her nails digging painfully into her palms as she bit her lower lip so hard she nearly drew blood.

Her eyes were bloodshot as she glared venomously at the upstairs window. A man and a woman alone in a bedroomโ€”it went without saying what was going to happen next.

Sienna pulled out her phone and dialed Hayden's number.

It rang for a long time before finally connecting.

Sienna kept her eyes glued to the silhouettes in the window, a bitter, suffocating lump forming in her throat.
