Cherry stared at her in silence.
After a long moment, Cherry spoke with a tone of utter exasperation.
"Ms. Lynd, it wasn't transferred to your account."
Zoe was stunned. "The money isn't mine?"
Cherry looked impatient. "It is yours, but for years, you've ordered me to transfer it to Ms. Winters's account. Is there a problem?"
Is there a problem? Cherry had been asking Zoe that exact question for five years.
Every time, she asked the same thing.
Cherry couldn't stand foolishness, but the salary Zoe offered to hire her as a private wealth manager was too astronomical to refuse. Yet, every year, looking at her employer's miserable, bitter expression, Cherry worried the woman might throw herself out a window.
"My money... transferred to Sienna Winters?"
Zoe was dumbfounded.
"Yes. I made the transfer yesterday. Thirty million dollars, down to the cent. It's all in Ms. Winters's account right now."
Cherry froze with her coffee cup halfway to her mouth. For the first time, she saw a blazing, unprecedented fury in Zoe's eyes.
Zoe grabbed her bag, downing her water in one gulp.
She glared at the manager. "Cherry, is it? You're fired."
Cherry spilled a little of her coffee, staring at Zoe in disbelief.
Was this something her spineless employer—a woman she had despised yet couldn't abandon for five years—would actually say?
"Ms. Lynd, may I ask why?"
A flicker of hope ignited in Cherry's eyes.
She had already decided to endure two more years before calling it quits to spare her mental health.
She had met a lot of people in high finance. A client like Zoe made anyone want to pull their hair out.
Cherry felt a surge of excitement but worried this newfound spine was just a fleeting phase.
"Ms. Cherry, you claim to be my private wealth manager. Transferring my money to someone else is embezzlement. I suspect you're working for Sienna. I'm firing you before you steal anything else. You're lucky I'm not calling the cops."
Zoe couldn't afford to cross Sienna right now, but she could definitely kick Cherry to the curb.
Cherry rubbed her temples. Was her employer transitioning from hopelessly lovesick to a full-blown schizophrenic?
She explained with extreme impatience.
"Ms. Lynd, you ordered me to make those transfers. I don't have the authorization to move your money to Ms. Winters on my own. I have the electronic documents for five years of transaction records. Do you want to see them for yourself?"
