He draped his jacket over Gillian's shoulders. "Still wearing heels? You really don't care about the baby, do you?"
His voice was low and devoid of emotion, yet every word dripped with a chilling edge.
Of course. He was only here for the baby.
He leaned in close, his hot breath brushing against her neck, sending a shiver down her spine that made her shrink back slightly.
York's tone turned dangerous. "You want to open your own clinic and secure funding, so why haven't you come to me? Did you forget your husband is in venture capital?"
Gillian offered a thin smile but said nothing.
He was the undefeated titan of the investment world. How could she not know?
She was dead set on a divorce and wanted absolutely nothing more to do with him.
If she let him invest, she would still be trapped under his thumb even after they signed the papers.
Annoyed by her silence, York loosened his tie. "Speak."
Gillian met his gaze calmly. "Shouldn't you reflect on yourself? You're my husband, yet I refuse to ask for your help. Why do you think that is?"
Because he was having an affair. Because he never cared about her. Whenever she had pleaded with him in the past, he had never taken her needs seriously, offering only humiliation and cold shoulders in return.
She wasn't foolish anymore. She was no longer the Gillian who revolved her entire life around him, desperately trying to thaw his frozen heart.
"Do you even still see me as your husband?" York glared at her. "Flirting with an older man right under my nose, making a fool out of me. You're really something, Gillian."
Gillian laughed softly. "If you don't want to be made a fool of, then sign the divorce papers. My actions will have nothing to do with you, and you won't have to get so angry."
He had pushed her to the brink, backing her into a corner with no way out, all just to force her to beg.
But she wouldn't yield. She would do whatever it took, as long as it didn't cross her bottom line.
All she wanted was to break free from York, get a divorce, and secure enough money for her mother's continued care.
