Gillian furrowed her brow slightly.
If he had done this in the past, she would have been thrilled and forgiven him instantly.
She would have been overjoyed that he had actually dealt with Hailey, his mistress, for her sake.
But now, she was utterly disappointed in him.
Her heart was as stagnant as a pool of dead water.
"I told you before, that matter has absolutely nothing to do with me anymore."
Gillian looked at him. "Even if she had stayed on the project, it wouldn't have affected me."
Just as expected, the man's expression darkened at her words.
She wasn't accepting his favor, so his anger was normal.
Gillian didn't stay to finish her breakfast.
She slipped on her shoes and left, not bothering to glance back at his grim expression.

On the subway ride to work, she scrolled through used car listings on her phone.
A cheap car for a few thousand dollars would be fine for a daily commute, but she worried about the safety ratings.
By the time she squeezed her way off the crowded train, she hadn't found anything she liked.
She texted Valery, asking if she knew any used car dealers who could recommend something under ten thousand dollars.
Valery quickly replied, "If you need a car, I have a spare one you can drive."
"No way. You're always chasing stories, you need your vehicles. I'll just buy one myself."
"Then let me spot you the money for now," Valery insisted. "Pay me back when you're back on your feet. You need the cash right now, and I can definitely afford to front you the money for a used car."
Gillian let out a soft sigh, knowing that between best friends, no further words were needed.
"It's settled then, don't argue with me. I just transferred fifteen thousand dollars to your account. Check it."
