York's voice was frigid. “You won't even eat Susan's cooking anymore. Who spoiled your appetite? If you refuse to eat anything, what are you trying to be? A saint?”
Gillian highly doubted York actually cared about her dietary habits. Beatrice had probably chewed him out behind closed doors.
She shoved past him, climbed into bed, and pulled the covers over her shoulders. “Don't leave early tomorrow. Your mother said the lawyers are dropping off the divorce agreement in the morning. Sign it before you go.”
Just as she settled in, the mattress dipped under a heavy weight. York slid under the covers beside her.
His familiar, intoxicating scent enveloped her instantly.
Gillian's spine went completely rigid.
After years of marriage, sharing a bed with York should have felt completely normal, but they had slept in separate rooms for months.
Now, the sheer intimacy of it made her heart hammer wildly in her chest.
His hot breath fanned against the back of her neck. “Dr. Jordan, your heart is racing. Are you getting flustered?”
Gillian yanked the blanket tighter around herself. “Flustered by what? I've seen every inch of you. You have zero interest in me, and the feeling is entirely mutual.”
She didn't see the glacial fury that crossed York's face.
Surrounded by his scent, Gillian miraculously slept through the night.
When she woke the next morning, a heavy, muscular arm was wrapped securely around her waist, pinning her flush against York's chest.
His breathing was slow and even. The cedar scent formed an impenetrable fortress around her, wrapping her in a dangerous, deceitful illusion of safety.
Her chest tightened, a painful lump forming in her throat.
Gillian pressed her lips together. Staring at his peaceful sleeping face, she took a deep breath and carefully tried to pry his arm off her waist.
The second she moved, York dragged her aggressively back against his chest.
Gillian froze, instinctively thrashing against his grip.
“Wifey, stop squirming. Is the baby acting up again?”
His groggy, sleep-roughened voice muttered against her ear.
The words violently shoved Gillian into a pitch-black abyss.
