I Loved You in the Dark Until Someone Loved Me in the Light novel Chapter 77

The corporate world was unforgiving to women. If she took time off, someone else would eagerly swoop in and take her spot. By the time she gave birth and returned, would she even have a place in this hospital?

She had clawed her way to this position through sheer willpower and blood. She refused to surrender it so easily.

Besides, she needed every penny she could get right now.

Gillian shook her head weakly. "I probably just didn't sleep well last night. I'll just schedule fewer surgeries going forward and try to avoid night shifts."

She could survive without the overtime pay, but she couldn't afford to lose the job entirely.

Miles frowned. Reaching out, he took her wrist, checking her pulse. His brow creased deeply as he felt her rapid, faint heart rate. "Didn't I ask a friend to bring you imported prenatal supplements? Why is your condition still so fragile?"

"It's fine..." Gillian gently pulled her hand back. "I know my own limits."

Miles, usually so composed and gentle, looked at her with uncharacteristic severity.

"Gillian, you don't know your limits at all. I saw those supplements on Hailey's desk. Did you give them to her, or did York snatch them away from you?"

His voice dropped heavily. "If you suffer a miscarriage in this state, you might never be able to conceive again."

Gillian pressed her pale lips together and stayed completely silent.

Watching her destroy herself like this made Miles's heart ache fiercely.

He let out a heavy sigh, unable to maintain his harsh tone. His voice softened. "Are you really willing to ruin your body over a man?"

Gillian offered a faint, exhausted smile. "I'm long past the age of sacrificing myself for men. Every decision I make now is purely for my own survival."

In the past, her desperate obsession with York had driven her into this miserable, inescapable corner.

Her catastrophic marriage had taught her a brutal lesson: never blindly throw yourself into a toxic, unequal relationship.

Over time, it destroys your spirit, erases your identity, and leaves you an empty shell.

When your capacity to love is systematically crushed, regardless of whether you try again or walk away, you are the only one left bleeding.
