I Loved You in the Dark Until Someone Loved Me in the Light novel Chapter 80

"Wow, Mr. Foster really treats you right. Hiring a private doctor to be at your beck and call!"

Hailey lowered her head in a display of bashful shyness.

Hearing the commotion, York finally cracked his eyes open. He stared at Gillian's dripping wet clothes, his gaze turning somber. "What took you so long?"

"The rain was too heavy. I couldn't drive fast," Gillian said flatly. "And I was forced to stand at the entrance for half an hour."

York scoffed, rubbing his temples forcefully. "You couldn't even get through the front door?"

"York, this place is strictly members-only. Someone with Dr. Jordan's status would obviously be stopped by security. It's totally my fault for not thinking of that and leaving her stranded in the rain."

Hailey's apology sounded impossibly considerate, her eyes welling with fake sympathy. "I'm so sorry, Dr. Jordan. I really didn't think about it. I'm just so used to York bringing me to these places, I forgot you can't just walk in off the street."

It sounded like innocent guilt, but the humiliation was deliberate. The undertone was screaming: *You're too poor and insignificant to belong in my world.*

York lowered his gaze, refusing to look at Gillian again. His voice dripped with mockery. "If you couldn't get in, couldn't you call? Or did you expect me to go wait for you at the door?"

Gillian was exhausted—physically and spiritually. In his eyes, everything she did was an unforgivable failure. Instead of caring that she was freezing, he only punished her for being late.

Arguing was utterly meaningless.

"I'm here to examine Miss Sinclair."

She just wanted to get this over with and leave.

As she stepped forward, York held up a hand. "You're soaking wet. Go change into something else before you come anywhere near us."

After a beat, he added coldly:

"Don't you dare pass a chill to Hailey."

Gillian's lips pressed into a tight line as a swarm of agonizing needles pierced her heart.

For a split second, she had foolishly thought he possessed a shred of human decency and was telling her to change for her own sake.

He just didn't want his mistress catching a cold.

Minutes later, Gillian was escorted back into the room, forced into a dry server's uniform.

Hailey beamed at her, her eyes flashing with malicious delight. "I have to say, Dr. Jordan, you really look the part. That uniform suits you perfectly."

She was throwing her lowly status right in her face.

At the hospital, Gillian was Head of Obstetrics. But here, in this fortress of wealth and power, she was less than nothing.
