She had only come down here to stop York from sabotaging her mother's care, not to beg for forgiveness.
"I have absolutely no reason to apologize to her," Gillian stated, her voice perfectly even, refusing to yield an inch.
York frowned, clearly losing his temper. "You shoved Hailey and nearly caused a miscarriage. You're a maternity doctor. Do you have zero respect for human life?"
"Did I push you, or did you fall on your own?"
Gillian fixed a frigid stare on Hailey, her voice cutting through the room.
The hospital had security cameras everywhere. She had nothing to hide. If Hailey dared to lie to her face, she would demand the footage right now.
Hailey bit her lip, looking down in shame. "I'm so sorry, Gillian. You just looked so pale, and I wanted to support you. You were so angry with me, and when I tried to help, I slipped, and we both went down..."
She played the innocent victim perfectly. Looking up with wide, tearful eyes, she asked, "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"
So, Hailey hadn't actually accused her of pushing her.
York had simply decided it was Gillian's fault on his own.
Gillian took a slow, steadying breath. Ignoring Hailey completely, she shifted her gaze back to York. "Mr. Foster. Am I still required to apologize?"
York looked up at her, his face as hard as stone. "Why shouldn't you? She fell because she was trying to help you. She nearly lost our child. Do you feel no remorse?"
Gillian's brow twitched.
She had always believed York was, at the very least, a rational man.
But she had forgotten that he was blinded by his affection for Hailey. Of course he would bend reality to protect her.
"York, please don't be so hard on Gillian. She's going through a lot right now. Being suspended over those horrible rumors must be destroying her. Besides, I'm the one who slipped and dragged her down with me. She doesn't owe me an apology."
York scoffed coldly. "Rumors don't just appear out of thin air. If she wasn't out sleeping around and sneaking off in the dead of night with an engaged man, she wouldn't be in this pathetic situation."
Gillian sucked in a sharp breath, fighting violently to keep her emotions in check.
To him, she was nothing but a filthy, scheming whore. The internet mob was only confirming what he already believed.
