The night breeze swept past her, making her shiver from the cold. Gillian quickened her pace back into the hospital to keep vigil by her mother.
York had produced the ring and told her to go back to being Mrs. Foster—a Mrs. Foster completely hidden in the shadows.
Was one ring and a marriage certificate supposed to chain her down for the rest of her life?
She refused to endure another second of this suffocating marriage.
Once her mother's condition stabilized, she would finally have the mental bandwidth to fight York on the divorce again.
After hanging up, York sat in the driver's seat. He turned his head and stared out the half-rolled window, watching the petite woman's retreating silhouette disappear into the night. His gaze was impenetrably dark.

The next day.
Gillian watched as her mother was wheeled into the operating room.
To her surprise, Xavier showed up.
The man took a seat on the bench outside the surgical ward, casually crossing his long legs. A faint smile graced his lips as he looked at her. "Miles has a social engagement with his fiancée today and couldn't get away. He asked me to come keep you company."
Gillian pursed her lips. "There's no need to go through all this trouble. I'm fine on my own."
Xavier studied her in silence for a few seconds before letting out a light chuckle. "I just moved back to the country, so I don't really have anything going on. We've run into each other quite a few times now. Don't tell me you still don't consider me a friend, Gillian?"
A lawyer's logic was impeccably tight. Gillian had no way to argue with him. He had already helped her out several times; trying to chase him away now would only make her look ungrateful.
Trying to debate a lawyer would get her absolutely nowhere.
In the end, she didn't refuse him again.
Having Xavier as a friend brought her absolutely zero downsides.
Even if he eventually declined to represent her in her divorce lawsuit, she could still ask him for valuable legal advice.
She looked at him directly. "You're a smart man, Xavier. You have to know that I only want to be friends with you because I need your help."
"True," Xavier admitted effortlessly. "But if I wasn't willing, do you really think anyone could take advantage of me?"
Gillian smiled softly. "Then thank you for keeping me company today."
