She flagged down a cab.

"Riverdale General Hospital, please."

The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

"Riverdale General? The roads around there are blocked off today. Some VIPs are visiting, so cars can't get through. I can drop you off nearby, and you can walk the rest of the way. Sound good?"

"That's fine."

The cab drove for twenty minutes before pulling up to an intersection.

The driver pointed ahead.

"Walk straight for about a thousand feet, take a right at the corner, and you're there."

Sienna paid the fare and stepped out.

She walked the thousand feet and turned right.

Then, she froze.

The main entrance to Riverdale General Hospital was straight ahead.

Police tape cordoned off the entrance, with two rows of security guards in black suits flanking the doors.

A crowd had gathered outside the tape. Some people were filming on their phones, while others whispered amongst themselves.

"Who is that? What's with the massive spectacle?"

"Word is it's some big shot from the state level. They brought in a specialized medical team all the way from the capital."

"What kind of illness requires all this?"

"Who knows. All I know is ordinary folks like us aren't getting in."

Sienna stood there, gripping the strap of her purse.

She took a deep breath and walked up to the barrier.

"Excuse me, my father is admitted here in the ICU. Please let me through."

The guard glanced down at her.

"Not today. We have strict orders from above. No unauthorized personnel."

"I'm not unauthorized. I'm family."

"I said, not today." The guard's tone left no room for negotiation. "Come back tomorrow."

Sienna stood behind the tape, staring up at the hospital building.

She pulled out her phone and found the number for Tiffany Vance, her college classmate who now worked in the inpatient department.

She called her and explained the situation.

Tiffany promised to ask around and told her to wait for an update.

The wait was agonizingly slow.
