I Stopped Loving Him When He Let Me Bleed Out novel Chapter 408

"Who are you looking for?"

"My name is Sienna Sterling. I'm here to retrieve a document for someone," she answered truthfully.

The person inside frowned even deeper.

"For who?"

Sienna didn't mention Maeve by name. She hesitated for a second and pursed her lips.

"Her last name is Thorne."

The person behind the door was a young girl, perhaps seventeen or eighteen years old, looking incredibly green.

She gave Sienna a quick once-over, muttered "wait," and slammed the door shut again.

About three minutes later, the door reopened.

The young girl's tone was entirely indifferent.

"Maeve sent you?"

Sienna nodded.

The girl crossed her arms and leaned against the doorframe, making no move to let her in.

"What did she tell you to get?"

Before Sienna could answer, a violent fit of coughing erupted from the courtyard. It was a heavy, suffocating sound, as if the air was being forced out of the very depths of a chest, followed immediately by the crash of something being knocked to the ground.

The young girl's face drained of color, and she spun around, sprinting back inside.

Sienna rushed in after her.

In the courtyard, an old man was slumped halfway off a wicker chair. His complexion was incredibly dull, his lips tinged with an unnatural grayish-purple hue. The backs of his hands were swollen, and his fingertips were slightly blue.

His breathing was shallow and rapid, his shoulders hitching with every labored inhalation, as if something was blocking his chest cavity.

"Grandpa! Grandpa, don't scare me!" the young girl shrieked in absolute panic.

Sienna hurried over and crouched down. She pressed a finger against the front of the old man's lower leg. The skin caved in and sprang back agonizingly slow—pitting edema.

She quickly checked the man's lips and fingernails. The dark coloring indicated severe peripheral hypoxia.

She then gently peeled back his eyelids. The conjunctiva was dark, and the surface of his tongue was cracked, showing clear signs of extreme dehydration.
