"I'm not coming over today. I'm with a friend."
There was a brief pause on the other end.
"Lily?"
"No," Sienna said. "Don't worry about it."
She hung up and walked with Georgina toward the front courtyard.
The sun had completely set, leaving only a final streak of dim orange light on the horizon, painting the old gray tiles of the estate with a thin layer of gold.
Walking beside her, Georgina slowly began to speak.
"Thirty-seven years ago was the height of the Vance family's glory. My grandpa had just become the president of Northern University, and our home was always filled with important guests. Aunt Maeve was eighteen at the time. She was the only daughter, and everyone spoiled her."
She paused.
"Then, one day, someone showed up at our door. A middle-aged woman brought an eighteen-year-old girl and stood right outside, claiming that the girl was the actual biological daughter of the Vance family. There had been a mix-up at the hospital. Aunt Maeve wasn't a Vance; this new girl was."
"The woman was incredibly poor, and the girl standing behind her was tiny and frail. Her clothes were worn, and her pants were too short for her. That girl was Yolanda. Her father was an alcoholic who beat her constantly. She grew up in that house and suffered immensely."
Georgina turned to face her.
"My grandpa did a paternity test, and the results confirmed it. Yolanda was his biological daughter. Aunt Maeve wasn't."
Sienna stood in the courtyard, the last rays of twilight falling on her shoulders.
She opened her mouth, but not a single word came out.
She had never expected this trip to unveil a story like this.
She thought of Maeve's eyes—always so guarded and distant—her indifferent tone of voice, and the image of her rescuing animals in the mountains at sunset.
These fragments suddenly pieced together a past she had never known.
