"Georgie."
A raspy, aged voice carried over from the doorway of the main house.
Georgina paused what she was doing and turned her head.
Percival Vance was leaning heavily against the doorframe. He looked much better than he had that afternoon, capable of standing on his own two feet.
His gaze bypassed Georgina and landed squarely on Sienna.
"Young lady, thank you."
"You don't need to thank me. I'm just glad you've stabilized."
Percival spoke slowly. "Could you please come with me for a moment?"
Sienna followed Percival into the main hall.
The room was incredibly dim, illuminated only by a single, worn-out desk lamp.
Percival sat down heavily in his chair, his hands gripping his dark wooden cane.
He remained silent for a long time before finally speaking.
"How is Maeve doing these days? What does she do? Is she married?"
Sienna considered her words carefully.
"She's a veterinarian for an international wildlife rescue organization. She spends most of her time in Africa and South America. She's single, but she seems to be doing very well."
As Percival listened, his gaze remained fixed on the base of the desk lamp, as if staring at something far, far away.
"She always loved animals ever since she was a little girl. Our courtyard was filled with them—cats, dogs, rabbits, hedgehogs. Once, she brought back a sparrow with a broken wing and nursed it for half a month until it lived."
He paused, his voice dropping to a frail whisper. "Then she left, and there was no one left to take care of them."
Percival's eyes seemed unfocused, like a man who had wandered too far into his memories and couldn't find his way back.
"Mr. Vance, the past is the past. We have to look forward. I was talking to Georgina earlier. Her grades are excellent, and she wants to study medicine. She has the potential for medical school. I really believe she should continue her education."
Percival let out a heavy sigh.
"I have no one to blame but myself. I drained every last cent we had, using all my connections to try and save my daughter. Because of that, Georgina's father grew to resent me. He completely immigrated abroad and refused to ever come back. He started a new family over there, had a son, and abandoned Georgina."
