“I’m on it!” Donna called, heading inside.
Ryan crouched down so he was eye to eye with Timmy. “Hey buddy, want to play a game with Uncle Ryan? You like Go, right? How about a couple of rounds?”
Timmy’s face lit up. He glanced at Amelia, who nodded her approval, and just like that, he was all about his favorite board game.
“Okay!”
Before going upstairs, Amelia paused and looked back at the living room. There they were—Ryan and Timmy, totally focused on the game. The scene was so warm and peaceful, it almost made her smile.
She pulled the corners of her mouth into a silent grin and headed up the stairs.
As she turned away, Ryan glanced up, his gaze lingering quietly on her retreating figure.
“Uncle Ryan, it’s your turn!” Timmy’s voice snapped him back to the present.
Ryan picked up a white stone and set it on the board.
Timmy leaned in, deep in concentration as he made his move.
“Uncle Ryan…”
“Yeah?” Ryan answered, a bit distracted as he placed another white piece.
Out of nowhere, Timmy asked, “Are you going to marry my mom?”
Ryan’s hand froze for a split second before he picked up another stone, acting like it was nothing.
“Why do you ask that?”
“Because my mom likes you a lot. But if you’re going to be like my dad and make her sad…” Timmy looked up at him, his eyes so much like Amelia’s, serious and searching. “Then you should just leave her now. Don’t make her upset.”
Ryan gave a small smile and ruffled Timmy’s hair, but he didn’t answer.
After two games, bedtime rolled around and Donna came to collect Timmy.
Ryan stayed behind, gathering up the pieces. When he stood, a wave of blinding white light washed over his vision, making his head spin.
There was a pause, some angry breathing, but the man knew Ryan was right.
“Stick to the plan,” Ryan said quietly. “And don’t forget the most important thing—don’t hurt her. You know what’ll happen if you do.”
He hung up and sat in silence for a moment before dialing another number—Zoe.
Half a world away, the sun was just dipping below the horizon.
Zoe’s face lit up when she saw his name pop up.
“Ryan! You finally called! I was starting to think you’d forgotten about me!” She tried to keep her excitement in check, but her voice was bright and a little shy. “So, when are you coming to visit? Or should I just fly over there?”
“Zoe, I need a favor,” Ryan said, his tone softer.
“What is it? If I can help, I will, no matter what…”
“Get engaged to me.”
