Amelia didn’t want to deal with him. Clive, looking a little desperate, stepped in front of her, blocking her way to the car.
A few security guards at the school gate immediately noticed. They didn’t come over, but their eyes were fixed on the scene.
Amelia glared at Clive, her voice cold. “If I yell right now, you know the Salmeron name won’t save you. You’ll be pinned to the ground before you can blink. Move.”
“Amelia, I really need your help,” Clive said quietly.
“Not interested,” she shot back.
“Please, for Timmy and Penny?”
Her icy expression softened just a fraction. Clive let out a tiny breath of relief. He knew kids were her soft spot. She could cut him off and turn her back on the Salmeron family, but as long as the children were involved, Amelia could never truly walk away.
“This isn’t the place to talk. There’s a coffee shop nearby. Can we sit for a bit? I promise, just half an hour. That’s all I’m asking.”
Amelia frowned, thinking it over. After a moment, she gave in. “Half an hour. No more.”
The coffee shop was quiet, sunlight spilling through the windows—bright but leaving the place feeling cold, not warm.
A waitress came by. Clive blurted out, “Two Americanos.”
Amelia cut in, “I’ll have a latte.”
Clive paused, looking at her with a complicated expression. She didn’t even glance his way, her face calm and distant.
But the important part was...
Amelia wrapped her hands around her coffee cup, her gaze growing serious.
She’d heard from Grandpa Baker that Felix’s unit had pulled out of Gwenny Island. Felix was the only one who hadn’t made it back.
“Amelia, you’re close to the Baker family. I’m begging you, can’t you talk to them?” Clive’s voice was pleading. “Felix is important. Mr. Baker will do whatever it takes to find him. But Caroline… she doesn’t mean anything to them. Even if she went for Felix, the Bakers won’t bother with her. Please, could you ask them to help bring Caroline back, too?”
Amelia looked straight at him, her face unreadable.
“Felix went there on a mission. Caroline just went to make trouble. If something happens to her, that’s on her. I have no obligation, and honestly, no right to ask the Baker family to risk themselves for her.”
