Nathan’s face broke into a big, warm grin when he spotted Amelia. “Amelia! It’s been forever. Come sit with us!”
Amelia smiled back, making her way over. Most of the food on the table was already gone.
Ryan didn’t bother getting up. Instead, he reached out and took her hand in his, his voice soft. “Did you eat? If not, we can order more. Check out the menu—their specialties are really good. I think you’ll like them.”
Amelia glanced down at their hands. His palm was cool, and for some reason, that chill felt especially sharp right then.
“I’ve already eaten,” she said, trying to sound casual. Her eyes flicked to Aaron, sitting across from her.
Ryan made the introduction. “That’s Aaron, Nathan’s older brother.”
Aaron nodded politely. “Ms. Sadinton.”
Amelia had definitely heard the name Aaron Morris before. She nodded back, just as polite. “Mr. Morris.”
Then she looked past Ryan, her gaze landing on Zoe.
“Nice to see you again, Miss Zoe Lennon.”
Zoe met her eyes, a lazy smile spreading across her pretty, mixed-race features. “Long time no see, Ms. Sadinton. Blame Ryan. He knows my memory’s terrible, but he never mentioned you after I got here, so I forgot all about you. If I’d remembered, I’d have made him invite you to join us from the start.”
Her smile was bright and bold, almost a little provocative.
Nathan felt a chill run down his spine. He shot a nervous look at Ryan, worried Zoe had gone too far. What if Ryan snapped and did something crazy?
Amelia’s hand froze around her spoon.
Zoe pouted. “But I just want a bite.”
Ryan shot her a look, his voice cool. “Don’t complain to me if you get cramps later.”
He didn’t stop there. He swapped his own dessert with Zoe’s, then took a big spoonful, making it clear she wasn’t getting any.
Amelia suddenly found the red bean soup in her mouth unbearably sweet, almost bitter. She lost her appetite, set down her spoon, and stood up.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Morris. Nathan. I’m not feeling well—I think I’ll head home and rest.” She turned to Ryan, trying to keep her tone steady. “Let’s go.”
