He knew better than anyone—she hated being betrayed. Nothing hurt her more than giving her heart to someone and getting it broken in return.
Clive had already put her through enough pain.
So now, she had zero tolerance for it.
Ryan had figured her out… almost. There was just one thing he got wrong.
Himself.
Ryan’s Adam’s apple bobbed as if he was about to say something, but all he could manage was a crooked, helpless smile. “Ms. Sadinton, you’re way too smart, you know that? You’re making this really hard for me.” His voice was lazy and warm, teasing but full of affection.
Amelia couldn’t help herself—she punched his arm.
“Seriously, Ryan? Playing games like this? Didn’t I promise I’d make sure you live a long life? Why can’t you just trust me? I can save you! I know I can!” By the time she finished, her eyes were already red and watery.
Ryan gently wiped away the tears that slipped down her cheek and pulled her into his arms. He rested his chin on her head and let out a soft sigh. In the freezing air, even his breath turned to mist, vanishing in the wind.
His voice was softer than the snow. “Amelia, I just want you to have a happy life. That’s all I ever wanted.”
Even if he wasn’t in it.
“You can’t just leave me when I’ve already fallen for you,” Amelia whispered, clutching the front of his shirt like she was holding on to his heart itself. Ryan felt an ache deep in his chest, raw and real.
Her voice was shaky, rough with emotion. “I’ll save you, Ryan. This time, I swear I will.”
How could she still love so fearlessly, after everything Clive had put her through? After being lied to, after being hurt so badly, she still believed in love—with him.
Ryan ran his fingers gently through her hair as snowflakes landed and melted instantly.
“Okay,” he said, so softly only she could hear.
Amelia looked up, serious as ever. “No more tricks, Ryan. Don’t ever try to fool me like that again, or I’ll really get mad.”
Ryan leaned down and pressed a light kiss to her forehead. “Okay.”
Amelia finally smiled, her mood brightening. She reached for his hand and laced her fingers tightly with his.
“Come on, let’s go explore all the places we haven’t seen yet.”
She smiled, her whole face lighting up. “I’ll be back before New Year’s, Ryan. I want to spend our first New Year’s together. After that, we’ll have years and years to celebrate.”
Ryan just stared at her, a soft smile on his pale lips. “Okay.”
But this time, Amelia wouldn’t let him off easy. She nudged him, wanting him to say it again, and say it right.
Ryan gave in, grinning as he played along. “I, Ryan, promise that every New Year from now on, I’ll spend it with Amelia.”
That was good enough for her. She grinned, hooked her pinky with his, and sealed the promise.
Ryan kept watching her, like he never wanted to look away.
They spent a long time wandering the campus, hand in hand. As the sun set, they headed back to Maplewood Garden.
Ryan made them a simple dinner—just two dishes and a soup. After they ate, they curled up on the couch together and watched a movie, just like any couple would. Amelia leaned into his arms, her heart overflowing with quiet happiness.
When the movie ended, she looked up and saw Ryan had fallen asleep at some point. She didn’t want to wake him, so she slipped out of his embrace, tiptoed onto the balcony, and called Tavon.
“Tavon, I’ve made up my mind. I’ll go. But I have one condition. I need you to help me find something…”
