A group of masked medical staff rushed in, pushing a gurney. They gently lifted the unconscious Ryan onto it and whisked him straight from the Maplewood Garden villa up to the rooftop, where a jet was already waiting.
Zoe followed them onto the plane, her mind spinning.
“Francisco, what is going on? What’s wrong with Ryan?” she blurted out, completely thrown. “He told me he might go blind and didn’t want to hold Amelia back. That’s why he asked me to come and help with this little charade…”
To Zoe, it had all seemed simple. Even if Ryan lost his sight, she liked him just the same. She would’ve gladly been his eyes—no big deal. Honestly, she’d always looked down on whatever flimsy feelings existed between Amelia and Ryan.
But seeing Ryan now, her heart clenched. He was nothing like she’d imagined.
There were dried streaks of blood on his face, making his skin look ghostly pale. His breathing was so shallow, so fragile.
He looked… well, he looked like he was dying.
Francisco shot her a heavy look, clearly in no mood for explanations. “Miss Lennon, I need you to keep this to yourself.”
The jet landed on the rooftop of an exclusive private hospital. Everything was already set up for them.
Zoe tried to follow them into Ryan’s room, but Francisco blocked her way.
His voice was polite but unyielding. “Miss Lennon, there’s nothing more you can do here. I’ll have someone drive you home so you can rest.”
Through the half-open door, Zoe caught a glimpse of Ryan just as he was seized by a violent coughing fit. She couldn’t see his face, but she saw the blood he coughed up, staining the crisp white sheets.
For the first time, the seriousness of the situation really hit her.
“Francisco… is Ryan… is he dying?”
Francisco’s jaw tightened.
“Mr. Packman will be okay. He’ll make it. He promised Ms. Sadinton he’d live to a hundred.”
Zoe shook her head, backing away. “If he really was going to live to a hundred, why would he ask me to lie to Amelia?”
Francisco’s face darkened, but he bit back whatever he wanted to say. Instead, he turned around and went into the room.
One of his men approached Zoe. “Miss Lennon, let me walk you—”
“I’m not leaving!” Zoe snapped, glaring at the closed door. Her stubbornness kicked in and she dropped to a squat right there in the hallway. “I’m staying right here until Ryan wakes up! I need to hear the truth from him!”
…
At eight in the morning, the car Tavon arranged arrived on the dot to pick up Amelia and take her to an airfield near the military base.
Tavon and Mr. Wilson both came to see her off.
“Ms. Sadinton, thank you for your bravery and willingness to go through with this hostage exchange,” Tavon said sincerely. “Don’t worry, we’ll protect you every step of the way. We already have a team in place, and as soon as the hostages are released, we’ll get you back safely—no matter what it takes.”
“Remember, Ms. Sadinton, if your life is in danger, don’t hesitate to use it. We’ll handle everything after.”
Amelia stared at the tiny, deadly gun in her hand. She was supposed to be a doctor—the one who saved lives.
Her mind flashed to Ryan. He had once killed to save her, taking down a dangerous fugitive.
“Ms. Sadinton?”
Amelia snapped back to attention and nodded. “Got it. I’ll remember everything.”
As the plane soared across the ocean, dawn was breaking on the other side of the world. In a spotless hospital room filled with the sharp scent of medicine and disinfectant, Ryan slowly opened his eyes. Good. He wasn’t blind.
He glanced around and spotted Aaron lounging in a nearby chair, legs up, reading a magazine.
Aaron must have felt Ryan’s gaze, because he looked up and met Ryan’s eyes.
Ryan grunted, “What are you doing here?”
Aaron set the magazine aside and adjusted his glasses. “First, this hospital belongs to me. Second, before your surgery, we have two Packman Global projects that need your signature. And finally, just in case you lose your hearing, let me say—you were terrible at acting during dinner.”
Ryan closed his eyes and managed a single, tired word. “Out.”
