Karma Doesn’t Sleep The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 716

Amelia was still alive.

Caroline’s heart skipped a beat. She could feel panic rising in her chest, but she forced herself to stay calm and think fast. She remembered when Amelia fell—Tatum’s boat was right there. Tatum’s people must have caught her. That had to be it.

She worked hard to keep her face neutral, not letting any emotion slip.

Kit suddenly turned to her. “Ms. Salmeron, you can relax now.”

“Kit…” Caroline forced a bright, relieved smile. “I’m so happy. It’s such a relief that she’s okay! Please, you have to bring her back.”

Kit’s eyes narrowed, his tone layered with meaning. “Of course. That’s our whole mission—to bring Ms. Sadinton home safely. If you hadn’t shown up, she’d probably already be on a plane back to Alson Creek.”

Caroline’s smile faltered. “What’s that supposed to mean? I’m a citizen too, you know! Isn’t it your job to get me home as well?”

Kit’s stare was razor sharp, making Caroline’s skin crawl. “Since last year, Gwenny Island and the surrounding waters have been classified as high-risk by our government. Travel is strongly discouraged, and everyone living here has already been brought back home.” His voice was stern. “Ms. Salmeron, how exactly did you get here? Through what channel, and for what reason? I don’t think I need to remind you about the rules.”

Caroline had nothing to say. The truth was, Kit already knew everything about her before she even walked in. He was furious—this woman had barged in and ruined his plans.

“I… I didn’t know it was this dangerous. And I only went to Tiger Wind Island to help! I wanted to save—”

“I don’t care why you came,” Kit interrupted, clearly out of patience as Caroline’s eyes filled with tears again. “Your flight is booked for this afternoon. You’re going back, Ms. Salmeron.”

“No way.” Caroline shook her head. “I’m waiting for my sister-in-law. I’ll go home with her once you bring her back.”

She wasn’t worried about Amelia being rescued—she was terrified that once Amelia came back, she’d expose everything Caroline had done.

Kit’s voice went cold. “Ms. Salmeron, this isn’t a request. I’m telling you. Two soldiers will be escorting you out.”

“Kit, I—”

Caroline tried to protest, but Kit cut her off. “If you keep interfering, I don’t care who your family is or what connections you have. I’ll make sure you spend some time behind bars.”

Caroline shut up immediately.

Kit gave a look to the soldiers who’d brought her. They got the message right away.

“Ms. Salmeron, this way please.”

Caroline had no choice but to follow.

Once she was gone, Kit wasted no time. “Get in touch with the Alson Creek police. Have them assign plainclothes officers to watch Caroline. She’s not leaving Alson Creek without my say so.”

“Felix…” Her voice came out as a scratchy whisper. Her throat burned.

Felix handed her a canteen and a pouch of berries. “Drink some water first, then eat. You swallowed a lot of seawater. No wonder you feel awful.”

He set down the bamboo basket on his back. Amelia glanced inside and saw two fish, already cleaned and ready to cook.

Felix started a fire with practiced ease.

Amelia gulped down some water and quickly tried to stop him. “Isn’t it dangerous to start a fire? Won’t the smoke give us away?”

Felix looked up at her anxious face and smirked. “If I made rookie mistakes like that, do you think I’d still be alive here? Ms. Sadinton, you really don’t give me enough credit.”

Amelia fell silent. Of course. Felix was ex-special forces. If he was okay making a fire, he must know what he was doing.

She was shivering, so she scooted closer to the heat. Only then did she notice the soft, dry grass beneath her and that her hand had been bandaged—roughly, but it would do.

She stared at her injured hand, and Caroline’s face flashed through her mind. She took a shaky breath.

How could someone be so cruel?
