Blood welled instantly from the back of Amelia’s hand. She stared at Caroline like she was seeing the devil himself.
“Caroline, what are you doing? Are you even human?!”
But the helicopter’s rotors were deafening, completely swallowing Amelia’s voice. No one in the rescue crew could hear her.
Caroline just gave a cold, mocking smile, pretending to help. “Don’t give up, Amelia! Grab my hand!” she called, all fake concern. At the same time, she dug her diamond ring right into the open wound on Amelia’s hand.
“Ah!” Amelia finally couldn’t hang on. Pain shot through her, her grip slipped, and she fell from over ten meters in the air straight into the sea.
“Amelia!” Caroline screamed, her voice full of fake anguish as she watched Amelia hit the water. But there was a small, satisfied smile tugging at her lips.
A dead woman wouldn’t threaten her ever again.
From the helicopter, the crew couldn’t see exactly what happened. All they saw was Amelia falling.
Once Caroline was safe on board, she broke into loud sobs. “It’s all my fault! I was so nervous, so scared—I stepped on her hand, and when I tried to pull her up, she just… she couldn’t hold on…” She cried even harder, acting like she was about to jump out after Amelia, but a crew member grabbed her and held her back.
The rescue team shared uneasy glances. In the end, their only choice was to bring Caroline back first.
Caroline was taken straight to the embassy.
There, she finally got to shower, change into fresh clothes, and have her wounds treated by medical staff. Once she’d cleaned up, someone led her to an office.
Kit was waiting inside, along with the local ambassador and two members of the rescue team from earlier.
Kit looked stormy. The ambassador was on a call but waved Caroline over as she walked in. “Ms. Salmeron, right? Take this call. It’s your brother, Clive.”
Caroline reached for the phone, but Kit stepped over and snatched it out of the ambassador’s hand.
“Sorry, Mr. Salmeron. Your sister needs to help us with our investigation. Once we’re finished, I’ll make sure she gets home safely,” Kit said, and hung up.
He gave Caroline a look that could freeze water. Years in the military had given him a presence that made ordinary people shrink away.
