Amelia spotted them right away. Tatum’s guys. Her heart skipped a beat as Tatum himself stepped out from the group.
He didn’t even bother looking at Felix. Instead, he shot Amelia a cold, mocking smile. “Ms. Sadinton, you really are a handful. Do you know how hard you made me work to find you?”
Felix instinctively moved in front of Amelia, shielding her as he pulled her back.
Behind Amelia, the villagers who had just seemed so calm suddenly dropped the act. They looked tense, eyes darting nervously toward their homes. Felix’s brow creased. Something was off. Then it hit him—the loudest, most energetic kids in the village were nowhere to be seen.
A second later, men from Tatum’s crew started dragging children out of almost every house. The kids were crying, reaching desperately for their parents.
The village chief, who had worked with Felix before, stared at the ground, clearly ashamed to meet his eyes.
Felix glared at Tatum, eyes hard as steel. The only reason this village had stayed a safe zone on the island was because the women, children, and elders here were family to every faction. By taking their kids hostage, Tatum was basically picking a fight with everyone on the island. Either he’d lost it, or there was something even scarier than making the whole island his enemy—something that would happen if he failed to catch Amelia.
Felix’s eyes narrowed. Ryan’s face flashed in his mind. What the hell was that guy planning?
He started to reach for his gun, but Amelia quietly pressed down on his arm to stop him.
“There are too many of them, and there are innocent people everywhere. We can’t win this,” she whispered, her eyes scanning for a way out.
