Inside the car, Miranda caught a glimpse of what was happening on the street.
“Oh my god, that’s a textbook scam! That old guy is totally picking on someone nice.”
Diana didn’t even look up from her phone. She’d been focused on her Snake game, and after growing her snake so long, she’d just crashed into her own tail. Frustrated, she glanced out the window.
One look and she recognized the unlucky “victim” the old man was trying to scam—it was Aaron.
He was impossible to miss, looking like he had a special filter just for him, standing out from the crowd without even trying.
Diana took in Aaron’s quiet, stoic face and instantly pictured a whole soap-opera scene in her mind—some sheltered prince leaving his palace for the first time, running smack into some streetwise troublemakers.
He must feel so lost right now. He’s probably never seen anything like this before.
After that dinner they’d shared last time, Diana had actually grown to like Aaron. He didn’t talk much, but he was gentle and refined in a quietly elegant way.
Diana had always had way too much of a hero complex, and right now, Aaron looked like a helpless little bunny that needed saving.
“I’m coming!”
She pulled on her mask and swung the car door open without a second thought.
Miranda nearly had a heart attack trying to stop her. “Diana, where are you going?!”
Decked out and determined, Diana didn’t even pause. “To save the hero, obviously!”
By this point, Aaron was already surrounded by people. His expression was unreadable, but behind his glasses, those gorgeous eyes were getting colder by the second.
He was in a terrible mood today.
He was seriously considering how satisfying it would be to break someone’s bones.
But before Aaron could do anything, a slim figure broke through the crowd toward him. She had on a hat and mask and you couldn’t see her face at all, but Aaron had a sharp sense of smell. The faint scent of perfume told him immediately—it was Diana.
“Hey, old man, aren’t you running a scam here?” Diana purposely dropped her voice, glaring fiercely at the man on the ground.
The old scammer wasn’t intimidated by a girl. “Don’t think you can start accusing me just because your boyfriend here is handsome! He’s the one who hit me—he hurt me!”
“Please,” Diana scoffed. “Like I wouldn’t know? He’s my husband! I know exactly what kind of person he is.”
Aaron said nothing, but he was just as startled as the scammer.
Diana just waved him off. “It’s nothing. Seriously, though—why are you out here alone? Where are your bodyguards?”
Aaron glanced to the shadows behind her. He was never actually alone. There were always bodyguards, sometimes you saw them, sometimes you didn’t. If Diana hadn’t shown up just now, someone would have dealt with the scammer for him.
But looking at her—so bright, so alive—suddenly he didn’t want to admit the truth.
“I told them not to follow me. I wanted some time to myself.”
Technically not a lie. His personal team had stayed back, but those family-hired guys never really left him alone.
Diana studied him for a moment, searching his face.
“Mr. Morris, did something happen? Are you upset?”
“What makes you say that?” Aaron asked quietly.
She leaned in, rising on her toes to get a little closer, and for a second, Aaron felt almost see-through under her gaze.
Softly, she said, “You just look so sad. Like you’ve lost something really important.”
