Aaron couldn’t bring himself to open the bag.
That was something his mother had taught him—a lesson drilled into him since he was young. In his world, you couldn’t afford to care. The second you let yourself care, you handed someone the power to hurt you.
He closed his eyes, his voice soft as he said, “I’m heading to the meeting now. Once I’ve finished with the people from the presidential house, I’ll head back to Switzerland.”
“Alright,” Mrs. Morris replied, finally satisfied, and hung up.
Aaron was about to get into the car when he suddenly felt someone grab his arm.
He turned and found Diana standing there, blocking his way. Confused, he frowned a little. “Ms. Brooks?”
She met his gaze. “Mr. Morris, remember when I bought you dinner? I was thinking—maybe, as a trade, you could spare an hour of your time and hang out with me?”
Half an hour later, Aaron was following Diana down to the docks. She led him in circles, sidestepping the crowds, until they reached a giant, abandoned ship.
Inside, though, the cabin felt surprisingly cozy and inviting.
“I actually bought this ship,” Diana said, straight-faced. “It was super cheap—no one wanted it, and there’s no fixing it. Now it’s my secret hideout. Every time I feel down, I come here and just sit for a while.”
Through the window, the sea stretched endlessly beyond.
“My mom taught me something when I was a kid,” she said quietly. “When you feel so sad you can’t talk about it, stare at the ocean and tell it everything in your head. It really helps.”
Diana knew better than most what it felt like to lose someone important.
It all sounded almost like a fairy tale. Aaron studied her before asking, “Why are you doing this for me?”
She shrugged, completely earnest. “I just… want you to be a little happier, Mr. Morris. You’re a good person. I think you deserve some more happiness in your life.”
“What about Amelia? She’s still out of town on a work trip. If she comes back and hears about this… she’ll be crushed. I don’t know how she’ll survive it…”
“She will,” Aaron said firmly, his hands anchoring on her shoulders, steady and reassuring. “Amelia will make it through, because she still has people who need her. Besides her child, she’s found her real father now.”
Suddenly all of Ryan’s cryptic decisions made sense—why he’d sent Amelia to Tiger Wind Island.
Aaron finally understood. On that island, Amelia had found her birth father.
Ryan had known all along what mattered most to her—her family. He’d gone to extraordinary lengths, giving everything he had, just to make sure she’d never be alone again.
With people she cared about, Amelia wouldn’t give up on life for Ryan’s sake.
Aaron knew her too well. He knew exactly how to keep her going—how to help her choose to live, no matter how hard it got.
