Tiger Wind Island.
After finishing the acupuncture on the mysterious man, Amelia stayed by his side. Without warning, a sharp pain shot through her chest, knocking the breath out of her and forcing her to hunch over.
At that moment, she heard a faint rustling from the bed. Amelia looked up straight into the man’s clouded eyes.
“You’re awake? How do you feel?” she whispered. “Can you understand me?”
The man said nothing, just fixed his gaze on her face. Then his eyes seemed to come alive—he reached out, grabbing her arm with such desperation that his bony fingers dug painfully into her skin.
Amelia flinched in shock. “Let me go!”
He opened his mouth but only let out a low, animal-like whimper.
Amelia instinctively tried to pull away, but he held on tight, refusing to let her go.
Just then, an icy and furious voice rang out from behind her. “Let her go.”
Amelia turned to see Felix storm in, the guards at the door already dealt with. Felix aimed his gun right at the man’s head.
But when Amelia looked back, she saw tears brimming in the man’s eyes. Something in her heart twisted.
“Wait!” she called to Felix, then gently said to the man, “Do you… do you know me?”
Tears flooded down the man’s face. He struggled, fighting to form words. When he finally managed it, the name he called out left Amelia frozen in shock.
He choked out, rough and broken, “Norma…”
Norma. Her mother’s name.
Amelia grabbed his arm, breathless. “You knew my mother?”
“Mother…?” The man blinked in confusion, then his body trembled even harder, overcome with emotion. His gnarled hand reached for Amelia’s cheek. Felix tensed, about to intervene, but Amelia stopped him.
“It’s okay, Felix. Leave him. He won’t hurt me.”
Amelia searched the man’s teary eyes, pieces of a long-buried truth falling into place. Suddenly, her whole body was shaking and tears spilled down her cheeks.
“You’re…”
Before she could finish, the man fumbled at his collar, pulling out an old, rusty pocket watch. With trembling hands, he opened it. Inside was a faded photo—a young woman, her mother, Norma.
Amelia waited until he was deeply asleep before quietly freeing her hand and slipping out of the room.
Outside, Kit and Felix were talking. When they saw Amelia, they paused. Kit handed her a folder.
“Ms. Sadinton, the man you saved—his name is Anthony Anderson. He used to be one of the world’s top nuclear weapons experts. Almost thirty years ago, he was kidnapped on his way to a conference. The international community searched everywhere, but he completely vanished. Everyone assumed he was dead…”
A thousand emotions tumbled through Amelia’s mind. “He’s my real father…” she whispered. “He didn’t abandon me. He just couldn’t come back.”
“After he disappeared, terrorists forced Mr. Anderson to work for them. He refused, so they pumped him full of all sorts of psychotropic drugs to control him,” Kit explained quietly, sounding guilty. “Our government will take full responsibility for his recovery now.”
“Thank you. I’ll do whatever it takes to help my dad too,” Amelia replied softly. A question suddenly popped into her head. “Kit, I have to ask—how did you find the secret room?”
“That’s the weird part,” Kit admitted. “I didn’t. The coordinates came to me automatically—from the location itself.”
Amelia’s mind blanked for a second. “Automatically? How is that even possible? That was supposed to be Tatum’s stronghold…”
She stopped, realizing everything was wrong. From her kidnapping by Tatum to this reunion with her father—none of it added up.
It felt like the truth was right there, on the verge of being revealed, heavy and waiting. Suddenly, a fierce headache pulsed behind her eyes.
