Amelia shook her head. “If I wanted to talk, I would have already said everything. Now that Ruby’s transplant has gone through, once her surgery is done, I probably won’t stay in Silkwood. Daniel and I—we’ll eventually go our separate ways. I don’t want any more ties between us.”
Charles let out a long sigh, at a loss for words. As Daniel’s friend, he felt guilty for keeping quiet, but he just couldn’t bring himself to betray Amelia either.
At this point, all he could do was keep it to himself and see how things played out.
After dinner, Charles drove Amelia back to Elm Estates.
She got out of the car and waved goodbye. “Drive safe.”
Charles pushed open his door and stepped out too. “I’ll walk you in.”
“No need. Just one turn past the gate and I’m home,” Amelia replied, a little awkward. Their relationship wasn’t so close that he needed to see her to her doorstep. “You should go. Get some rest—you’ve got work tomorrow.”
Charles nodded. “Alright. You get some rest too.”
Not far away, a black luxury SUV screeched to a stop.
From the backseat, a man stared coldly at the two of them.
He’d come straight from the airport to find Amelia, and look what he saw.
It was a summer night, the breeze gentle, streetlights stretching their shadows long across the pavement—like a scene from a movie.
Charles waved with a smile, and Amelia smiled back, soft and warm.
What’s so funny? If she likes smiling so much, maybe she should’ve been a comedian instead of a doctor. She’d make more money, too.
And Amelia—she’s always got that poker face with me, but with Charles, she’s all sunshine and smiles. What is he, solar-powered?
With a slam, the car door shut hard enough to rattle the air. At first, Amelia didn’t even notice. Then, a tall, imposing figure appeared beside her.
Charles turned and stared in surprise. “Weren’t you in Sunland? When did you get back?”

“I’ll accept that answer,” he declared, appeased in an instant. Then he pressed further, “If you don’t care about him, that means you still care about me, right?”
“…”
“You knew I was coming, so you waited for me outside the gate. My wife is always the most thoughtful.”

But Daniel, all long legs and stubbornness, kept up easily. “Why so quiet? So happy to see your husband you’re speechless?”
Amelia took a deep breath. As they waited for the elevator, she turned to look at him. “Daniel. Tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow what?”

I hope this couple gets back together and he is the donor for his daughter. Thank you for the new chapters....
How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
