Penelope Reed's eyes lit up. She quickly leaned in. "Jade? What did she say? Where is she? Is she doing well?"

Marcus Reed waved his hand, signaling her to calm down, and put the phone back to his ear.

"Jade, Penelope is here too. Say a few words to her."

Jade's impatient voice came through the phone. "Dad, take me off speakerphone. I don't want to talk to her."

Marcus glanced at Penelope and awkwardly took the phone off speaker.

Penelope's smile froze for a second, but she quickly recovered and leaned back in to listen.

"Jade, are you eating well? Is that man mistreating you?"

Jade ignored the question entirely and asked directly, "Dad, when are Nora and Hudson Lancaster actually having their wedding? I want to come back."

"The end of the month, just one week left. You're coming back? That's wonderful!"

"Yeah, and I'm bringing Archer with me."

Marcus frowned. "Who exactly is this guy? You've been together for so long, and we haven't even seen his face. He isn't some street thug, is he?"

Jade sounded smug. "Archer is a British duke's son. He's practically royalty, so stop talking nonsense."

Marcus scoffed. "A duke's son? More like a con artist."

"Dad!"

Jade's voice rose a pitch. "Archer is so good to me. You haven't even met him, so stop making things up. You're crossing a line!"

Marcus sighed. "Alright, alright, I'll drop it. After Nora and Hudson's wedding, bring him back so we can meet him."

"Of course! You'll see that my man is just as good as Hudson." She paused, then asked, "By the way, is Hudson on his deathbed yet? You better keep Nora happy so she doesn't back out."

Marcus opened his mouth to reply but swallowed his words.

He had seen Hudson a few times and hadn't noticed any signs of him dying.
