Carey sat in the center of the sofa, face set, fingers combing his white beard.

Mooncrown’s cancellation of the North District development deal with the Bluestone Pack didn’t truly surprise him.

After all, Luis’s fiancée had nearly lost her life at Carey’s 85th birthday gala.

The fact that Luis hadn’t already tried to bury the Bluestone Pack was, in its way, mercy.

Carey thought for a moment, then sighed. “Forget the North District project. Consider it not our fate. The Bluestone Pack will survive without that profit.”

Gerald frowned. “Dad, if it were just losing money, we’d swallow it. But do you know what that brat Luis did?

“I’ve got word Mooncrown Corporation plans to do the North District deal with our mortal enemy–Sunnypolis Bank!

“They’ve been pressing Bluestone Bank for years. If they land Mooncrown’s North District, they’ll leapfrog us and become Nordvale’s biggest private bank–overnight.

“Mr. Eaton is all romance–addled! No regard for old ties. Just because of Deanna, he’s targeting

us on purpose.

Off to the side, Victoria flinched as she splashed hot liquid over her hand and flinched.

Carey glanced at her but said nothing. He looked up just in time to see Jennifer sneaking toward the front door on tiptoe.

“Jenni, where are you going?” Carey said, voice cold.

Jennifer jolted, turned, dropping her gaze. “Grandpa. I … made plans to go shopping with a friend.”

Carey ordered, “Back to your room.”

Seeing Carey offer no further rebuke, Jenni took that as permission, pulled a face, and bolted.

Moments later, a sports car howled to life outside and vanished down the drive.

Victoria handed Carey a fresh cup.

“Dad, I know this has you furious. I’ve already scolded Jenni; she knows she was wrong.

“The nanny raised her from childhood–she was like half a mother to Jenni. Her intention was… misguided ‘care,‘ not grasping the consequences. But the woman is dead; talking it to death changes nothing. Better we think clearly about how the Bluestone Pack faces this crisis.”

Carey took a sip and nodded slightly.

The daughter–in–law had a point: the nanny was dead, and they’d apologized and paid a price. Luis, however, had shown no regard for old ties. Very well–then they’d answer in kind.

Carey said, “I’m aware Mooncrown’s corporate summit is imminent. Their shareholders are not united. Some want Luis off the throne. Harrison, Gerald–go to the Westwind Pack. Speak with Harry and Grace. Tell them Bluestone Pack is willing to lend a hand.”

Gerald blinked. “Harry and Grace? Dad, what for?”

Carey shot him a look. “Mr. Eaton soft–confined his grandmother, Mrs. Eaton. The Westwind siblings have been angling to stir the shareholders to make trouble at the summit. They approached me before; I ignored them.

“But Luis went too far this time–no respect for an old man. I’m forced to strike back.
