I answered the call.
"Hey, my fabulously rich bestie."
Violet's voice came through the line, brimming with unrestrained excitement.
Looks like the whole world knows now—except me.
I couldn't help letting out a sigh.
The moment Violet heard it, she started protesting loudly, "That's not right. You just became insanely rich! At a time like this, shouldn't you be glowing, riding high, feeling like you've reached the peak of life?!"
I leaned back in my chair. "I am happy."
"Then, why do you sound like that? Oh! I get it—you're carrying Mooncrown Pack's future heir. Once the baby's born, all of Mooncrown Pack will be yours sooner or later, so 20 percent of the shares doesn't even excite you anymore."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" I frowned.
Aside from the time I had to deal with Ruth, I'd never coveted Mooncrown Pack's wealth. This sudden gift left me feeling unsettled.
I pressed my lips together and said honestly, "I feel a bit burdened."
"Burdened by what?"
"Luis treats me so well that it feels heavy. I'm not as amazing as he thinks. I lose my temper with him, act unreasonable, and honestly, I haven't really done much for him. The baby is something I chose to keep myself, not because of him..."
"Stop. Stop right there.
"Deanna, you've got it all backwards. Loving someone isn't about tallying these things. Luis gives because he loves you—he's not looking for returns from you."
"I know that, but I still feel uneasy."
"Do you love him?"
I nodded, then realized she couldn't see me. "I love him very much."
"Then, that's enough. You love each other—there's no need to overthink it. Right now, the most important thing is for you to take care of yourself and have the baby."
Suddenly, something hit me. "Oh no!"
"Weren't you dissatisfied with him before?"
"Sigh, that was a momentary misjudgment. Let me tell you—men who spend money on you don't necessarily love you, but men who give you their entire fortune absolutely do. That's love. Those shares are a grander declaration than a mark!"
Hearing that left me a little dizzy.
But somehow, it made a strange kind of sense.
"Didn't you say you still haven't mailed me the heritage scroll?"
Kathryn replied immediately, "I'll send it to you right now. Go register as soon as possible—hold onto Luis tight and don't let him slip away."
Money really is magic.
Everyone's attitude did a complete 180.
At this point, I had every reason to suspect that those shares might just be Luis's bait—to trap me firmly at his side.
