Deanna's POV:
I blinked. "What's this?"
Luis reached out and gently stroked the top of my head, his voice tender. "This was the ring my mother wore at her bonding ceremony. I'll get you a better one later."
Our eyes met, and I understood.
After that day, it was as if we had made an unspoken agreement. Neither of us had mentioned that sapphire ring since.
This man always understood me so well.
He knew that seeing the sapphire ring would remind me of Puddy.
Before, Luis had given me a moonstone bracelet, one designed to symbolize eternal promises and true love.
That sapphire ring must have been just as rare and precious.
But because of my emotional scars, he had quietly set aside that sapphire ring and replaced it with a different one.
Luis gazed at me deeply, holding my fingers tightly, as if he was afraid I might slip the ring off. There was a faint tremor in his voice. "That proposal wasn't perfect, but you already said yes. So, Deanna, you can't take it back."
Seeing this rare, almost anxious look on his face touched the softest part of my heart.
A teasing smile curved my lips. "Mr. Eaton, if we don't get moving, the city hall is going to close."
Luis paused for a moment, then his lips curved upward, and a soft warmth spread through his eyes.
He took my hand and walked toward the entrance of the city hall, each step deliberate and sincere.
His back was tall and straight, his broad silhouette completely enveloping mine.
It was as if he was saying that no matter what lay ahead, he would shield me from everything and keep me safe.
Our intertwined palms were slick with sweat. I couldn't tell if it was his or mine.
