Deanna's POV:
I pressed my lips together and rested my hand on my belly. "I'm almost seven months pregnant now. Our plan is to wait until after the baby is born, then decide from there."
My mother didn't respond right away, but her expression darkened.
I tried to explain. "It was my idea. At the end of the day, it's just the two of us living our lives together. Whether we have a ceremony or not doesn't really matter. Besides, I don't like making things too complicated."
Kathryn set down her fork. "Deanna, what kind of nonsense is that? The Mooncrown Pack is one of the most elite pureborn packs in Nordvale. If you don't have a proper ceremony, everyone in the werewolf community will think your position isn't legitimate."
Just then, Luis's warm hand reached over from under the table and took hold of my slightly cold fingers.
His thumb gently caressed the back of my hand as he spoke in an unhurried tone. "Mom is right. So once Deanna has the baby, I'll give her a grand mating ceremony."
Hearing such a clear promise from Luis, my mother's expression finally softened and returned to its earlier warmth.
"Additionally, the Mooncrown Pack will present the Mistbane Pack with three billion dollars as a bonding gift, as a show of sincerity."
I froze for a moment and couldn't help but look at him. "But ... didn't you already transfer 20% of Mooncrown Corporation's shares to me? That was already ... way too much."
"That was a personal gift from me. Everything that others would receive, my mate will have as well. Besides," he paused, his fingertip lightly tracing my palm, "my Luna deserves nothing but the best."
"But..." I wanted to say more.
My mother cut me off. "Luis knows how things are done. Now eat your dinner."
After dinner, I excused myself to use the restroom.
When I came out, I saw my mother seated in the high-backed armchair at the head of the living room, while Luis sat on the side couch in a slightly more relaxed posture, his head bowed as if listening intently or deep in thought.
I couldn't make out what they were discussing, only catching Luis's earnest reply.
"I will. Please don't worry."
I hurried over and took Luis's hand. "Mom, it's getting late. We should head home."
Kathryn shot me an exasperated look, then stood up.
"Deanna is due in three months. Luis, you'd better take good care of her."
Luis nodded solemnly and tightened his grip on my hand.
...
On the way back home, Luis kept his eyes on the road, driving with a casual ease.
