It has been a week.

Seven endless days since Raven was burned alive by the Rough King.

Seven nights of sleeplessness, where my bed feels colder than the dungeon walls beneath the pack house. Every time I close my eyes, I see flames roaring, merciless flames swallowing her screams, her tears, her pain. And every single time, I wake up choking on guilt.

I asked the men to search the warehouse again.

And again.

And again.

“Leave no corner untouched,” I had ordered, my voice hoarse, hollow. “Search the ashes. The rubble. The ground beneath.”

They returned one by one, heads bowed.

Nothing.

No bones.

No remains.

Not even a shred of cloth.

It made no sense.

Fire consumes flesh, yes, but not entirely. There should have been something. Anything. Even ashes shaped like her bones. But there was nothing. Just blackened ruins and silence that screamed too loudly.

“Enough,” I muttered, sitting on the edge of the bed. My hands trembled as I ran them through my hair. “She’s gone. Blaming myself won’t bring her back.”

You should still blame yourself, my wolf growled coldly. What happened is in the past. Focus on the pack. Focus on the children. Move forward.

I clenched my jaw. “You say that as if you don’t feel her death,” I snapped back at him. “As if she wasn’t our

mate.”

There was a pause.

Then, softer, almost broken, I miss her too. But there is nothing we can do now.

I sighed and forced myself off the bed. Staying here would only drown me further. I went into the bathroom, letting cold water cascade over my body, hoping it would wash away the guilt clinging to my skin. It didn’t.

After dressing, I headed toward the children’s room.

A week without their mother had changed them more than I ever imagined. When I opened the door, I found the three of them in tears. Zara’s face was buried in Lucian’s chest as he tried and failed to comfort her.

I walked in slowly.

“What’s wrong?” I asked gently, even though I already knew the answer.

Lucian looked up at me, his eyes red and swollen. “We want mummy,” he said, his voice cracking. “We want her to come back and read us bedtime stories.”

Zara sniffed. “Even if she can’t come back,” she whispered, “can we call her? Or… or did Mummy abandon us?” Lyra asked, her voice shaking

The word sliced through my chest.

“No,” I said quickly, kneeling and pulling them into my arms. “She didn’t abandon you. Never.”

Their small bodies trembled against mine.

“Then where is she?” Lucian asked quietly.

I swallowed hard.

“She went to see the Moon Goddess,” I said, my voice shaking despite my effort. “And she isn’t coming back”

They went silent.

Too silent.

Zara pulled away slowly, staring at me like she didn’t understand the words I had just spoken. “What do you mean… not coming back?”

Tears burned my eyes. “I miss her too,” I admitted. “Every single day. And I would do anything, anything, to bring her back. Even if it meant risking my life.”

They watched me closely.

“I promise you,” I continued, forcing strength into my voice, “I will be the best father to you. I will do everything your mother did. You won’t feel her absence. You can trust me.”

They nodded slowly, their trust breaking my heart even more.

We hugged for a long time before I asked them to come downstairs for breakfast. The dining table felt wrong and empty. Raven’s chair stood vacant, like a cruel reminder of everything I had lost.

I wiped away the tears quickly, refusing to let them see me break.

After breakfast, I took them back to my room before heading to my study.

Work. Distraction. Duty.

I mind–linked Beta Matthew, asking him to bring the files I had requested earlier. Minutes later, he entered the study, dropping the stack neatly on my desk.

“How have you been holding up?” Matthew asked carefully. “Since… her death.”

“I’m managing,” I replied stiffly. “I have to be strong for the children.”

He nodded, then frowned. “You look like someone whose mind refuses to accept reality.”

“That’s because it does,” I said bluntly. “If she truly burned to death in that fire, there should have been remains. Bones. Something. But there was nothing.”

Matthew hesitated. “The fire was intense, Alpha. Nothing could have survived it. Even bones can be reduced to ash.”

I leaned back, my eyes darkening. “I swear, Matthew. I will get back at the Rough King.”

He stiffened. “You shouldn’t. The last time you went after him recklessly, this happened.”

I slammed my hand on the desk. “He killed my mate.”

“And revenge won’t bring her back,” Matthew said firmly. “Let it go. Focus on your children. Be happy for them. Raven would want that wherever she is.”
