Reven’s POV

Two Weeks Later

It’s been two weeks now since I agreed to be a mother to Alpha Ethan’s kids, or at least pretend to be one, and in return, I get to keep my job.

And today am starting my babysitting job.

And two weeks of silence from Edna.

She hasn’t spoken to me properly since that night. Not a real conversation. Not the kind where she looks at me like I’m still her person, her family. Just short answers, tight nods, and avoidance. Like, if she lets herself get too close, she might say something she can’t take back.

Or hear something she doesn’t want to know.

I turn on the bed and stare at the ceiling, the early morning light bleeding through the thin curtains.

The room feels colder than usual, emptier. Edna’s side of the room is already made. She must have woken before dawn again.

Avoiding me.

A heavy sigh escapes my lips as I sit up slowly. My head throbs faintly, not from sleep but from thoughts. Endless, circling thoughts that never seem to settle.

I’ve asked her countless times what the problem is,I whisper to no one. But she just won’t talk.”

The words sound small in the quiet room.

Frustration bubbles inside me, tight and hot, and I swing my legs off the bed before it can grow into something worse. The iled floor is cold under my feet, grounding me, pulling me out of my spiraling mind.

Morning shift today.

It ends in the afternoon. After that, I’ll go to Alpha Ethan’s house, stay with the kids until evening, then come back home.

Home.

The word feels strange lately. Like something I’m borrowing instead of something I own.

Today sounds hectic,I mutter to myself as I walk toward the bathroom.

The mirror greets me with tired eyes and a face that looks older than it did two weeks ago. I splash cold water on my cheeks. inhaling sharply as the chill wakes me fully.

Water drips down my neck, soaking into the collar of my sleep shirt, but I don’t wipe it away immediately.

I just stand there, palms pressed to the sink, staring at my reflection.

Who am I becoming?

Someone who pretends to be the Alpha’s children mother for money.

I shake my head hard, as if I can physically dislodge the thoughts.

Coffee,I decide. Coffee will fix this.

Because what’s the best way to start your day other than a cup of coffee?

The kitchen is quiet when I step in, faint morning light pooling across the counter. I move automatically kettle, mug, sugar, coffee jar hands remembering what my mind doesn’t need to think about.

The familiar routine calms me. The small domestic normalcy of it.

I even smile a little.

Maybe today won’t be so bad.

Halfway through making the coffee, I hear soft footsteps behind me.

Edna.

She walks into the kitchen, hair messy from sleep, oversized shirt slipping off one shoulder. For a second, my chest warms with hope.

Maybe today she’ll talk to me.

Morning,” I say gently. Do you want some coffee?

She doesn’t answer.

Not even a nod.

She just stands there, watching me with an expression I can’t read. Not angry. Not sad. Justguarded.

Something inside me tightens.

Ednatalk to me.My voice comes out softer than I intended. What’s wrong? I don’t want us to continue like this. You’reyou’re the only family I have left.

The words tremble despite my effort to keep them steady.

I step closer and rest my hand lightly on her shoulder.

She stiffens under my touch, then turns to face me fully.

I don’t have a problem with you,she says finally.

Relief flickers then dies.

I just don’t feel comfortable with you going to a stranger’s house to babysit his kids. Just because you look like someone he knew before.”

Her voice isn’t loud. It doesn’t need to be. The disapproval in it cuts deeper than shouting ever could.

I swallow.

I understand how you feel,I say quietly. But I’m sure Alpha Ethan won’t harm me. And I’m not staying there permanently, I still come back home every day. It’s not like I’in leaving you.

She studies my face like she’s searching for something hidden beneath my skin.

Then she nods slowly.

I just want you to be safe.

The tension in my chest loosens.

I will be.

She hesitates, then sighs. AndI’m sorry for the harsh words I used during our argument.”

My eyes sting unexpectedly.

It’s fine,I whisper.

It isn’t fine. None of this is fine. But I’ll take peace over honesty right now.

We step into each other at the same time, arms wrapping tight, clinging more than hugging. For a moment, everything feels normal again.

Like before.

I pour the coffee into two cups, handing one to her. We sip quietly, the silence no longer sharp but soft.

Then she clears her throat.

Ifound myself a boyfriend, she says, almost shyly. We’re going on a date tonight.”

My face lights up instantly.

Aww, Edna! I’m so happy for you!

And I mean it. Truly. She deserves something good.

She smiles a real smile this time, and something in my chest aches at how much I’ve missed seeing it.

I excuse myself soon after to bathe, realizing I’m running late. The hot water relaxes my muscles, washing away the lingering heaviness of the morning.

When I step out, I move quickly clothes, hair, lip gloss. Just enough to look presentable without drawing attention.

I step outside and walk a short distance before hailing a cab.

The city is already awake, alive with noise and movement. I give the driver the address and sink into the seat, staring out the window as buildings blur past.

My mind drifts inevitably to Alpha Ethan.

Why does he look so familiar?

My fingers instinctively reach for the necklace hidden beneath my clothes. I pull it out slightly, just enough to see the tiny locket.

Inside is a photograph.

Or what’s left of one.

It’s faded, damaged. You can barely make out the face. Only the eyes are clear.

Oceanblue eyes.

Just like his.

But he isn’t the only person in the world with blue eyes.

Right?

Ma’am, we’re here.

The driver’s voice snaps me back. I blink, disoriented, then quickly pay and step out.

The mall looms in front of me: glass, steel, and stress.

Working here hasn’t been easy. Especially with Sophia around.

She makes my life miserable in ways subtle enough to deny but sharp enough to hurt. And she knows powerful people. One wrong move from me, and I could lose everything.

So I endure.

Save money. Keep my head down. Start something of my own one day.

Then I’ll quit.

Inside, I register my presence and change into my uniform. When I step out of the changing room, Sophia is standing by the door, speaking on her phone.

The moment she sees me, she ends the call.

Her eyes rake over me, cold, dismissive.

Then she walks away without a word.

You’re just a difficult person,I mutter under my breath.

The day begins.

Customers. Smiles. Transactions. Endless standing.

By midday, my feet ache, but I don’t complain. I can’t afford to.

Then the manager calls me over.

The delivery rider is on sick leave, she says, handing me a package and an address. You’ll do a home service delivery

Extra pay.

I’ll do it,I say immediately

She nods. Be careful. Call if anything goes wrong.
