I returned to where Mike was sitting and lowered myself into the chair, forcing a small smile onto my lips.

He looked at me, brows slightly furrowed. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” I replied quickly, picking up my glass as if it suddenly required all my attention.

But it wasn’t nothing.

It could never be nothing.

My mind was still back there with Sophia. With the way her hands trembled. With the fear in her eyes. With the strange, uncomfortable feeling that had settled in my chest the moment I decided to help her.

I didn’t want to talk about it.

Some things… were better left unsaid.

Mike studied me for a few seconds longer, like he didn’t quite believe me, but then he leaned back in his chair and let it go.

“Alright,” he said simply. “If you say so.”

We fell into an easy conversation after that–random things, light jokes, small laughter that didn’t demand too much from me. And I was grateful for it. Grateful that he didn’t push. Grateful that he didn’t try to dig into the parts of me I wasn’t ready to expose.

Time slipped by faster than I expected.

By the time I glanced at the wall clock, it was already past nine.

My eyes widened slightly.

“Oh no,” I muttered, pushing my chair back as I stood up. “I have to go.”

Mike blinked. “Already?”

“I have an early morning shift tomorrow. I can’t afford to be late,” I said, grabbing my bag.

He stood up immediately. “I’ll take you home.”

I shook my head almost instantly. “No. It’s fine. I can go by myself. I’m not a baby.”

A small smile tugged at his lips. “I didn’t say you were.”

“Still,” I insisted, slinging my bag over my shoulder. “I’ll be okay.”

He raised both hands in surrender. “Alright. Your choice.”

We walked out of the eatery together, the cool night air brushing softly against my skin. The street was quieter now, the usual noise toned down into a low hum of distant engines and occasional chatter.

I spotted a taxi and waved it down.

As it came to a stop. I turned to Mike.

“Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, Reven,” he said, his voice softer than before.

I slipped into the back seat, shutting the door behind me as the taxi pulled away.

And just like that… the silence returned.

I leaned my head against the window, staring out at the passing streetlights as my thoughts crept back in.

Sophia.

Was it necessary to help her?

The question echoed in my mind, stubborn and relentless.

She had never liked me.

That much was obvious.

“Who did the nurse say it was?”

Edna leaned back slightly, thinking.

I sighed softly.

She nodded.

“It’s no problem,” I said. “I’m just glad I’ve recovered enough to leave the hospital.”

Edna’s expression softened.

‘Me too.”

‘So,” she said. “How was work today?”
