Chapter 109 The Test
Chapter 109 The Test
Mabel walked toward the kitchen with a bright smile returning to her face.
Gillian glanced at Sylas and the gluttonous fox. She was full as well.

“After dinner, the two of you help Grandma feed the chicks. Also sow the seeds in the front and backyard fields. Consider it a light post-meal exercise. Most importantly, comfort Grandma and ease her worries over the fall of the Grayson family.”
“Why don’t you do it yourself?”
Tristan set down his fork, his appetite fading at the mention of the clan’s downfall.
“If I talk to her, she’ll still stay anxious. Words from Sylas will carry more weight and calm her down.”
Sylas nodded in agreement. Tending the fields and comforting Mabel were simple tasks. He had eaten dinner at Gillian’s home, so he had no reason to refuse.
“Rest assured, Mrs. Cole.”
The fall of the Grayson family was far more complicated than it seemed on the surface.
The clan’s backer was the Phoenixkin, a dominant force on Capital Planet.
They had lost a crucial subordinate clan. They would never let the matter rest easily.
Merrick’s future path would be far tougher than anyone anticipated.
“Mrs. Cole, aren’t you worried at all?”
Tristan stared at Gillian. He had no clue what answer he expected, yet he longed to hear her thoughts.
“There’s no point worrying. He has already wiped out the entire family.”
Tristan fell silent, unable to refute her words. Her reasoning made perfect sense.
“Finish your meals. Don’t waste a single grain of food.”
Gillian stood up and carried her tableware to the sink.
The summer sky was still bright, barely past six o’clock. She planned to head to Wilder Peak while there was still daylight.
As Gillian stepped into the yard, the fluffy black chicks swarmed toward her, chirping. She ignored them and walked straight out of the courtyard.
She sent Mabel a message. “I’m going for a walk with Freya. I’ll be back before dark.”
Gillian headed for the border patrol garrison. In her role as chief medical officer, she requested two beastman soldiers and a mini beetle aircraft to patrol the mountain with her.

Chapter 109 The Test
She had purchased twelve mountain plots in the Wasteland City. Among them, only Wilder Peak was `confirmed to contain blackstone. She knew nothing about the resources of the other eleven mountains
and the surrounding flatlands.
She planned to survey the terrain thoroughly today, so she could return alone later.
The two on-duty soldiers were familiar faces, Darren and Jasper. They were the first two beastman soldiers Gillian had treated after joining the medical team.
The two had grumbled earlier, wondering who would take a mountain tour so late. They never expected the visitor to be Gillian.
Their grumbles vanished instantly, replaced by eager hospitality the moment they saw her.
“Have you eaten dinner, Captain Sterling?”
“Where do you plan to visit, Captain Sterling?”
“Are you married, Captain Sterling?”
Gillian answered every question patiently.
“Yes, I’m married.”
The two soldiers let out a knowing hum. They had already heard rumors of her marriage and only sought confirmation.
It was clear to them that no other male in the legion stood a chance with her.
The sky blushed deep red. The wasteland’s sunset carried a uniquely desolate and solemn aura.
Though it was the same sun, the view here felt entirely different, bleak yet grand.
“Why did you come here? Nothing is interesting to see on this barren mountain, Captain Sterling.” Darren spoke casually. “We can take you to the Black Lake to view the black lotuses. The caeliflora are in full bloom and absolutely stunning right now.”
Jasper coughed softly and chimed in. “He’s right. This place is bare and dull. I heard a funny story the other day. Some fool spent a fortune buying these barren mountain lands. We only dropped our suspicion after verifying their clean background. We originally planned to dig through the mountains, thinking they hid precious resources.”
“Who would be reckless enough to buy this wasteland? What a fool.”
Gillian’s heart skipped a beat.
She suddenly realized how impulsive her previous purchase had been, and a wave of unease washed over
her.
If the land had not been purchased under Merrick’s account, the ruthless members of the 9th Legion would have dug up every inch of these mountains overnight.
