“Captain Sterling, these lands might actually be fit for farming after all.” Darren nudged Jasper hastily. urging him to smooth things over since he was the one who brought up the joke.
“Exactly, you’re right. They could work out somehow.” Jasper forced an awkward smile. Deep down, he knew it was impossible; no one had ever managed to grow crops on such barren ground.
“Thanks for your kind words.”
“It’s nothing at all. You saved our lives after all. How about we take you down for a closer look?”
“No need. My partner will be back tomorrow. I plan to come here with him later.”
Gillian chose not to stir up extra trouble.
Silence settled inside the aircraft.
Gillian could tell the two soldiers had fully let their guard down around her.
Had she failed to give a reasonable excuse earlier, they would surely have taken her in for questioning at the legion headquarters.
Now that they thought she was an unlucky buyer of wasteland, they felt completely relieved.
Soon, the mini aircraft began to descend slowly.
Gillian caught sight of the familiar mountain range, and her eyes lit up instantly.
Her precious resources were right here within reach.
She felt immense contentment gazing over the mountain terrain.
In her previous life, the blackstone veins spread across this place held enough resources to push her straight up to level nine.
“Aren’t you getting off to explore, Captain Sterling?” Darren circled the aircraft above the mountain she pointed out.
“I won’t head down now. It’s getting late. I wanted to see what my purchased lands look like.”
Gillian let out a soft sigh. “Judging by how dark and polluted the soil is, the contamination here is extremely severe. I might grow old and grey long before I purify it enough for crops.”
Her words were a slight exaggeration. With her current level 5 purification power, she could fully cleanse this entire mountain in less than half a month.
Yet thorough purification alone meant nothing without proper defensive barriers.
Tainted energy drifting from pollution sources and roaming tainted beasts would quickly undo all her work.

Chapter 110 Charming Sunset
Building a barrier strong enough to shield twelve mountains and vast stretches of flat land required massive amounts of ice gold materials, costing no less than five billion coins.
The only comforting fact was that all these lands were officially registered under her name.
“You’re right. No barrier means all purification efforts end up wasted.”
A hint of gloom crossed Jasper’s face. “I’ve lived in the Wasteland City most of my life. I wonder if I’ll ever see these barren lands covered in lush greenery.”
“Who can tell for sure?” Darren sighed in response.
Gillian sank into quiet thought.
Unlike the unguarded military defense zones in her previous life, these twelve mountains lay fully within regular legion patrol routes.
Every corner was exposed to plain sight. Even bending down to pick up a handful of soil would draw patrol aircraft to investigate.
It would be nearly impossible for her to mine blackstone secretly without being noticed.
“Coming all this way costs quite a lot. Let us take you down for a proper look around.” Darren steered the craft to glide low above the dark mountain ridges.
Gillian was already familiar with every detail here. Her main goal was fulfilled; she had confirmed the blackstone veins sat right under Merrick’s sphere of influence.
Getting her hands on these resources was no different from taking things straight from his grasp, which left her feeling quite upset.
The only practical way to mine blackstone legally and efficiently was to reach a cooperation deal with Merrick.
“Let’s head back. No wonder these lands are so cheap. Bargains always come with hidden drawbacks.”
Seeing her obvious distress, Darren and Jasper dropped all further persuasion and turned back immediately. They knew she had already suffered enough setbacks.
Gillian spent nearly fifty thousand coins in total to rent the aircraft and apply for accompanying soldiers, which was quite a hefty sum.
On her way back, the wrist terminal on her wrist vibrated. She opened it to see a message from Freya.
“Mabel said you went out for a walk with me. Where are you exactly?”
From the video screen, Gillian spotted Freya’s red grip-buggy parked right outside her courtyard. Mabel stood beside her, looking visibly worried.
She had never expected Freya to drop by so suddenly. She had thought Freya would head home early after sending over the chicks.
