“They say the 9th Legion takes good care of the families who corne to the front lines with them,” Mabel said loudly, gripping Gillian’s hand tightly and shielding her granddaughter behind her.
“My granddaughter and I sold our home just to be with her mate. And now you’re trying to bully us? I’m going to find your commander! I’ll let him decide whether this is how you treat soldiers’ families!”
Every word accused Tristan of picking on a military dependent.
Gillian’s heart ached. For eight years, she’d been used to fighting alone. She never meant to frighten Mabel.
“Grandma, I’m okay,” she said softly.
“Gillian, don’t be afraid. Even if we have to take this to the Commander, we won’t back down!” Mabel insisted.
She knew if they didn’t make a scene now, Tristan would use his rank against Gillian later. They had to take a stand and make sure everyone saw what was happening.
She patted Gillian’s arm gently. “Don’t worry. I’ll handle this.”
The noise drew the attention of the beastmen getting ready to leave the shuttle.
“Isn’t that the only woman who came here for love this year?”
“Someone’s giving her and her grandma a hard time? Let’s go check.”
“I don’t recognize that guy. Is he a new recruit?”
“Are you all blind? Can’t you see those pink-white fox ears? He’s from the Lawson family in Firefox City. He’s a major who just got dropped here.”
The watching beastmen wondered if Tristan, newly assigned to the legion, was already abusing his power and picking on a soldier’s family.
“Let’s go. No one messes with our people’s families.”
The beastmen of the 9th Legion were defiant by nature. They crowded closer.
Tristan decided he’d been too nice. The crowd was growing. He needed to end this fast.
“Ma’am,” he said, his voice unnervingly calm despite everything. “Your granddaughter attacked a superior officer. have the right to discipline her. But if she gives me what’s rightfully mine, I’ll let this go.”
Suddenly, he took a big step toward them. A bright pink light flashed in his eyes, and for a moment, nearly everyone nearby fell into a confused daze.
Gillian watched the crowd go silent and saw Mabel freeze. A cold wave of killing intent rose inside her.

“Major Lawson,” she said in a weak voice. “I was wrong. I’ll give it to you.”

Tristan smiled in satisfaction. She knew when to give in. His family’s innate talent had never failed him.
He held out his hand, his fox ears twitching slightly. “Don’t try anything. I’m running out of patience.”
The next second, Gillian’s golden psionic power gently lifted Tristan’s right hand. The warm energy made him pause in surprise.
Then Gillian slipped a metal band onto his wrist.
“What are you up to now?” he asked suspiciously.
Gillian swayed weakly, her eyes shiny with unshed tears. “Your hand is hurt. This is a healing metal band. It’s the only one I have. I wanted to give it to you as an apology.”
“I don’t need it. Just give me the wrist terminal.”
The cold metal, plus the soft touch of her small hand, caught Tristan off guard.
This is so annoying. Is this mated woman trying to seduce me?
He jerked his wrist away. He didn’t want to stay near her a second longer.
Seeing the healing band locked around his wrist, Gillian used his pull to stumble backward and fall to the ground. A wave of golden psionic power spread across the hard ground, snapping everyone out of their daze.
She let out a soft cry of pain, stared at her scraped palm, and began to sob quietly. “Major Lawson, please don’t hurt me! I’ll give you the wrist terminal. Even though it was a legion welfare gift for my mate… if you want it, I don’t dare keep it.”
The awakened beastmen were furious at Tristan’s behavior. They stepped in to protect Gillian.
“Major Lawson, you can’t lay a hand on a dependent! That’s against regulations!”
“This is too much! We’re reporting you to the Disciplinary!”
“Yeah, we’ll all go together!”
Tristan knew Gillian was playing him. “Give it to me!” he roared, reaching for the terminal.
Then Freya’s eyes lit up. The backup she’d called had arrived.
A man’s hand shot out and grabbed Tristan’s wrist.
“Lt. Col. Parker?” Tristan was surprised. He hadn’t even sensed George’s approach.
୮
George’s round panther eyes were sharp and cold. “Major Lawson, look at your delicate hand. Injured already? It pains me to see it. This is the latest healing metal. You couldn’t buy something this good outside for 100,000
