“Let them start by getting fully familiar with the basic procedures first. This way, they can steer clear of unnecessary errors. I believe they will breeze through all practical assessments this afternoon without any trouble.”

“I truly hope things turn out that well.”

Gillian noticed Sylas still standing right in front of her instead of heading off to tend to his own duties and a hint of confusion crossed her face.

“Is there anything else you need to bring up, Captain Moore?”

Sylas adjusted his glasses slowly, and his tone carried obvious hesitation as he spoke up.

“Regarding the ten new clerics who arrived alongside Ms. Locke, will you be the one to assign their daily work schedules, or will Ms. Locke take charge of all their arrangements personally?”

Gillian currently held the official position of chief medical officer within the medical team, so all final decisions naturally fell under her jurisdiction.

Yet Sylas still remembered that the previous group of clerics dispatched over from Capital Planet had all been quite stubborn and hard to manage. It had only been Elara’s firm control that kept all sorts of conflicts from breaking out back then. Considering Gillian only ranked as a level 3 cleric right now, she might easily end up getting pushed around and put at a disadvantage.

“I will take some time to sort this matter out thoroughly first. You may go and carry on with your regular tasks for the time being. Let these guests who traveled such a long distance settle down and enjoy a full night of proper rest first.”

“Understood.”

Sylas nodded in response and then turned to walk out of the office.

Gillian tapped open her wrist terminal and sent a private message to Elara right away. “Ms. Locke, would you prefer to arrange working shifts for those ten clerics yourself, or shall I handle all the scheduling work for them?”

“Gillian, you are carrying a child right now, Starting from tomorrow onward, I will take full charge of all affairs within the medical team. You focus on resting well and looking after your pregnancy with peace of mind.

Gillian blinked her eyes repeatedly. She felt eager to argue against such an arrangement, yet she was still wary of getting a light tap on her head from her newly found elder sister. In the end, she simply chose to pretend she had never even seen that reply at all.

“Patient number one hundred and sixty-five, please step inside for your consultation now.”

Far away at the taint source zone, Merrick had brought Adrian and Dominic along with him to inspect

every single dormant taint core scattered across the dangerous territory.

“Commander, we have detected no unusual signs whatsoever in this area.”

“Commander, everything remains stable and unaltered as usual.”

“Let us move out of here.”

The group of beastman fighters fully clad in sturdy bio-armor did not withdraw from the perilous core region until nightfall gradually fell over the entire Wasteland City.

“Commander, I suspect the alarming rumors we heard earlier might not hold any truth at all.”

Dominic felt a strong sense of inner relief deep down in his heart. If those taint cores that had lain dormant for six full years or even several decades were to suddenly erupt all at once, no living being in the surrounding areas would ever stand a chance of surviving such a catastrophic disaster.

He could not help but start casting doubts over the reliability of the intelligence channels that had delivered such unsettling news to Merrick in the first place.

Still, the tall and imposing figure leading the team showed absolutely no signs of letting down his guard in the slightest. Instead, he immediately issued orders to drastically boost local defensive forces.

“Triple the total number of patrol members, as well as extend all patrol durations. Maintain this enhanced security measure for a full month. Make absolutely certain that not a single tainted beast manages to break through our defensive lines and sneak into this restricted zone.”

“Got it.”

Dominic gave a formal reply, yet a look of obvious difficulty and helplessness lingered clearly on his facial features.

“Commander, most of the beastman soldiers stationed here have already suffered severe erosion caused by pervasive taint energy. They are barely holding on and enduring all the lingering side effects purely by relying on their strong willpower alone.

“Relying solely on healing metal to ease their physical discomfort costs far too many precious resources. We are in urgent need of professional clerics to provide proper spiritual treatment and relief.”

Even large patches of hard, scale-like texture had already grown all over Dominic’s own legs, bringing him sharp, piercing pain that never faded away easily.

“Are there any other practical requests you wish to put forward besides this one?”

Merrick was fully aware of how tough and grueling a time Dominic and his subordinates were going through. The closer anyone ventured toward the core of the taint source, the greater the lethal dangers all beastman troops would inevitably face.

It was truly admirable that they had managed to hold their ground for such a long period of time.

“It would be ideal if we could arrange a brand new batch of beastman warriors to come over and take over

our defensive duties for a certain stretch of time.”

Dominic had truly run out of better solutions. His main purpose for heading back from the taint source zone today was precisely to discuss this critical personnel replacement matter thoroughly with Black Rick.

“Ms. Locke has finally returned to our base camp.”

Her arrival could not have come at a more perfect moment. Merrick held extremely complicated feelings toward this powerful female; he felt both fond admiration and quite a few helpless frustrations toward her all at once.

She possessed remarkably outstanding professional capabilities and could handle all sorts of tough tasks with effortless ease, yet she also happened to be Gillian’s biological elder sister.

Back in the past days, she had guarded Gillian like an extremely precious treasure and never even allowed him to catch so much as a quick glimpse of Gillian’s photographs.

That was why he had secretly launched a private investigation into the hidden bond connecting Gillian and Elara, and this secret inquiry had gone on uninterrupted for roughly five or six years straight.

Gillian came from an impeccably upright and loyal family background. Two generations among her three immediate family members had already sacrificed their precious lives while standing firm to defend the vast Wasteland City.

Such a tragic family history had naturally stirred deep feelings of sympathy within Merrick’s heart from the very start.

Despite looking soft, delicate, and easy to bully on the surface, young Gillian had never sunk into endless self-pity or negative emotions at all. She had always been fully capable of taking care of both herself and Mabel all alone.

At the very beginning, Merrick had only intended to dig out basic information to figure out exactly who this special young female was. Gradually, he ended up getting swamped with various official duties and completely forgot all about it.

Whenever he managed to squeeze out some spare leisure time later on, he would regularly browse through all kinds of latest news reports sent over from Goldspine City. At first, he merely treated reading these updates about Gillian as a simple way to kill free time.

Elara was always such a fierce and hot-tempered female who never hesitated to yell at him or even pick petty fights with him over trivial matters.

If he had not needed to take careful consideration of the influential, powerful figures standing behind her to offer protection, Merrick would have long since taken/decisive action to settle all conflicts with her once and for all. Yet in stark contrast, her younger sister Gillian was undeniably lovely.

He had quietly watched Gillian grow up, transforming from an innocent teenager into an energetic young female. He had witnessed her successfully snatch plenty of rare, valuable treasures at auctions held inside Fortune Auction House and gradually build up a stable and fulfilling life.
